Book Synopsis Tom Morris of St. Andrews by : David Malcolm

Download or read book Tom Morris of St. Andrews written by David Malcolm. This book was released on 2011-07-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography in over 100 years of the great Tom Morris of St Andrews, who presided over one of the most illustrious periods in the history of golf, who - more than anyone before or since in any game - stamped his individual character upon his sport and how, in large measure, made golf what it is today. Born in a humble weaver's cottage in St Andrews in 1821, by the time of his death in 1908, he had become a figure of international renown. When he was buried with all the pomp and ceremony befitting an eminent Victorian, newspapers around the world reported his funeral, followed by his internment below the effigy of his son, Tommy, amidst the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral. In the course of his long life, he witnessed huge social and scientific changes in the world, none more so than in the game of golf that he had, in many respects, overseen and directed. By the time of his death, the game had expanded to become the most popular and geographically widespread of all sports and the essential recreational pursuit of gentlemen. Tom Morris was a sporting hero in an age of heroes, as well as golf's first iconic figure.

Book excerpt: A caddie since he was twelve and a golfer sporting a 1.8 handicap, Ollie decides to spend his gap year, pre Harvard, in St. Andrews: a town with the U.K.'s highest number of pubs per capita and home to the Old Course, golf's most famous eighteen holes, where he enrolls in the St. Andrews Links Trust caddie trainee program. Initially, the notoriously brusque veteran caddies treat Ollie like a pest. But after a year of waking up at 4:30 A.M. every morning and looping two rounds a day, Ollie earns their grudging respect. A charming coming-of-age memoir.

Download or read book On Hallowed Ground and the Golfing Pioneer of St. Andrews written by Michael T. Tracy. This book was released on 2018-04-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Immortal of Golf was born in humble circumstances in a weavers cottage. His father, John Morris (1777-1846), was a weaver and letter carrier as the family resided on North Street in the ancient city of St. Andrews. Tom, at the age of fifteen, was apprenticed to the renowned Allan Robertson, champion golfer, unbeaten in his lifetime, and continued his employment as a journeyman. Since being bred in the home of golf and also instructed in the ancient game it is not surprising that Morris began to acquire skillfulness in the sport and began earning distinction on the links. In one of the first public appearances of the young professional he was a partner with Robertson, and played in a match for 400 pounds against William and James Dunn, known as the Dunn Brothers of Musselburgh and Morris and Robertson succeeded on the last day of the match, after being four down with eighteen to play, in winning the match. A match for the ages.
