Seeking a holistic perspective to inform clay therapy, this project follows decades of research into the healing of trauma in minority cultures revealing the hidden power of spirituality as meaning making. A person-centred method reframes minority identity within a postmodern psychotherapy. Experiential methods in therapeutic art-as-life and life-as-art embraces scientific evolutionary theories of development, cooperation, ascent, and convergence. Clay-based psychotherapy is informed by culturally infused methods reflecting on western, minority, and disability experiences. We explore our therapy studio productions as well as the works of contemporary sculptor Andrea Martini, and the 15th century works in terracotta by Andrea della Robbia. Our approach provides for opportunities to reflect on the nature of clay art therapy in healing, capacity and skill building, identity formation, and in facilitating transcendent outcomes.

Book excerpt: This paper reports the findings of a heuristic inquiry into the relationship between spirituality and art therapy. The data presented in this research paper have been gathered from three primary sources, including appropriate literary works, personal material from the author's immersion in her own experience of spirituality and art therapy, and, thirdly, the words and images shared by four art therapists, as well as the author, in response to the question, "How have you encountered spirituality in art therapy?" The findings indicate that, in keeping with the longtime secularization of the mental health system, the art therapy community is hesitating to introduce explicit spiritual discourse into its training and practice. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that explicit spiritual discourse is possible and worthwhile, at least amongst art therapists on a one-to-one basis. An argument is made that spiritual discourse can play an important role in facilitating the spiritual healing and growth of art therapy clients, particularly as it serves a meaning making function. The art therapy community is encouraged to continue making space for spiritual discourse, particularly as a self-reflective process, with the ultimate intention of better serving clients.
