This book was released on 2011. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lyman-alpha emission is a key signature of the presence of hydrogen, and from this emission many properties of planetary atmospheres can be analyzed. Two projects are studying this emission on two planets for two different scientific purposes. On Venus, the Lyman-alpha emission is being studied to measure the deuterium to hydrogen (D/H) ratio of the atmosphere's exobase. One of the mysteries of Venus is why it is so dry compared to Earth, and this measurement will constrain how much water Venus has lost since planetary formation. The measurement will be made using a telescope with a spectrograph launched on a sounding rocket scheduled for launch in early 2012 from White Sands Missile Range. On Jupiter, the Lyman-alpha emission was observed to better characterize an anomalously bright region near the equator called the Lyman-alpha Bulge. Images and spectra taken by the Hubble Space Telescope while the Bulge was on the limb were analyzed. The brightness and scale height of the atmosphere along the limb was derived from the image data.. The spectral data confirm evidence of a superthermal component and that is moving more than 15 km/s faster than remaining hydrogen. This analysis shows evidence that the Bulge is influenced by similar processes that create equatorial anomalies similar to the ones on Earth.

Book Synopsis Advances in Spectroscopic Monitoring of the Atmosphere by : Weidong Chen

Download or read book Advances in Spectroscopic Monitoring of the Atmosphere written by Weidong Chen. This book was released on 2021-06-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Spectroscopic Monitoring of the Atmosphere provides a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge technologies and monitoring applications. Concepts are illustrated by numerous examples with information on spectroscopic techniques and applications widely distributed throughout the text. This information is important for researchers to gain an overview of recent developments in the field and make informed selections among the most suitable techniques. This volume also provides information that will allow researchers to explore implementing and developing new diagnostic tools or new approaches for trace gas and aerosol sensing themselves. Advances in Spectroscopic Monitoring of the Atmosphere covers advanced and newly emerging spectroscopic techniques for optical metrology of gases and particles in the atmosphere. This book will be a valuable reference for atmospheric scientists, including those whose focus is applying the methods to atmospheric studies, and those who develop instrumentation. It will also serve as a useful introduction to researchers entering the field and provide relevant examples to researchers and students developing and applying optical sensors for a variety of other scientific, technical, and industrial uses. Overview of new applications including remote sensing by UAV, laser heterodyne radiometry, dual comb spectroscopy, and more Features in-situ observations and measurements for real-world data Includes content on leading edge optical sensors

Download or read book Lyman Alpha Scattering in the Earth's Hydrogen Geocorona written by G. E. Thomas. This book was released on 1962. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interpretation that the nighttime Lyman alpha observed from rockets is solar Lyman alpha that was transported to the night side by the earth's extensive hydrogen envelope (the 'geocorona') is considered in detail. The equations of radi ation transfer are solved for several spherically symmetric models of the hydrogen distribution. The numerical results for the integrated Lyman alpha night glow are compared with the obser vations. Radiation transfer in models whose total hydrogen abundance is consistent with daytime absorption measurements is shown to be inadequate in accounting for the observed night glow features. (Author).
