Book excerpt: Every fifteen seconds someone commits a crime of domestic violence in the United States, and most violators will be court-mandated to receive group treatment. Outcome studies of traditional treatment programs (those with confrontational or educational approaches) indicate high rates of dropping out and low effectiveness, lending urgency to the need to find an alternative method. This book describes a cutting-edge treatment approach that creates effective, positive changes in domestic violence offenders. Solution-focused therapy focuses on holding offenders accountable and responsible for building solutions, rather than emphasizing their problems and deficits. By focusing on "solution-talk" instead of "problem-talk," clients are assisted in developing useful goals and solution behaviors that are then amplified, supported, and reinforced through a solution-building process. The book will be of great interest to professionals and graduate students in social work, psychology, and counseling.

Book Synopsis THT Impact of Pre-suppositional Lanuguage [i.e. Language] on Participants by : Chiang Chien-Jen

Download or read book THT Impact of Pre-suppositional Lanuguage [i.e. Language] on Participants written by Chiang Chien-Jen. This book was released on 2003. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This was a qualitative research study to understand the impact of pre-suppositional languages on participants: solution-focused domestic violence treatment group. Language serves communication on different levels including the surface meanings as well as its supposition. Consequently, the therapist using the language as a medium has to be aware that their therapeutic conversation also communicates the expectations and beliefs to participants. They need to be aware of their language in treatment process, especially when the solution is co-constructed by the participants and therapist through conversation in solution-focused therapy. The findings from this study provide insights for therapists about the impact on participants of pre-suppositional language. Findings of this study suggest that "pre-suppositional language" increase participants' awareness, make them feel capable and confident, help them to take responsibility for their behaviors, help participants to see their achievements, help participants to be able to see the positive future, help participants make connections from past exception/success to now, help participants to be more specific about what they are doing now, and help participants to evaluate their behaviors.
