Book excerpt: There is widespread interest in the way that smart energy control systems, such as assessment and monitoring techniques for low carbon, nearly-zero energy and net positive buildings can contribute to a Sustainable future, for current and future generations. There is a turning point on the horizon for the supply of energy from finite resources such as natural gas and oil become less reliable in economic terms and extraction become more challenging, and more unacceptable socially, such as adverse public reaction to ‘fracking’. Thus, in 2016 these challenges are having a major influence on the design, optimisation, performance measurements, operation and preservation of: buildings, neighbourhoods, cities, regions, countries and continents. The source and nature of energy, the security of supply and the equity of distribution, the environmental impact of its supply and utilization, are all crucial matters to be addressed by suppliers, consumers, governments, industry, academia, and financial institutions. This book entitled ‘Smart Energy Control Systems for Sustainable Buildings’ contains eleven chapters written by international experts based on enhanced conference papers presented at the Sustainability and Energy in Buildings International conference series. This book will be of interest to University staff and students; and also industry practioners.

Book Synopsis A Smart Energy System for Sustainable Buildings by : Faris Nizamic

Download or read book A Smart Energy System for Sustainable Buildings written by Faris Nizamic. This book was released on 2016-01-21. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's buildings are responsible for more than 40% of the world's total energy consumption. Current systems that manage equipment in buildings fail to reduce unnecessary energy consumption while at the same time maintaining the comfort of those using the buildings. This is usually because the existing systems cannot cope with the changes caused by interactions between people and the building environment. Furthermore, people using buildings are not sufficiently aware of how much buildings consume and of what concrete actions could help to reduce this consumption. Moreover, current building management systems do not take into account feedback from building users and their preferences regarding the conditions in their working environment. We designed and implemented a smart energy system to overcome these gaps. Our system took into account the behavior of building users so as to provide automated control of energy consumption and other processes within an actual building. With this system we also provided user dashboards to serve as a means of communication between the building and its users. In addition to reducing energy consumption we also introduced related optimizations such as reduction of water consumption and improvement of waste management, using the same system principles. We installed a prototype of this system in a modern university building, the Bernoulliborg, to show how such a system is realizable in actual working office space. This building served as the evaluation platform for our research.

Book Synopsis Sustainability in Energy and Buildings 2018 by : Prasad Kaparaju

Download or read book Sustainability in Energy and Buildings 2018 written by Prasad Kaparaju. This book was released on 2018-11-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected papers from SEB-18, the Tenth International Conference on Sustainability in Energy and Buildings, which was organised by KES International and Griffith University and held in Gold Coast, Australia in June 2018. SEB-18 invited contributions on a range of topics related to sustainable buildings and renewable energy, and explored innovative topics regarding intelligent buildings and cities. Applicable areas included the sustainable design and of buildings, neighbourhoods and cities (built and natural environment); optimisation and modelling techniques; smart energy systems for smart cities; green information communications technology; and a broad range of solar, wind, wave and other renewable energy topics. The aim of the conference was to bring together researchers and government and industry professionals to discuss the future of energy in buildings, neighbourhoods and cities from a theoretical, practical, implementation and simulation perspective. In addition, SEB-18 offered an exciting opportunity to present, interact, and learn about the latest research in Sustainability in Energy and Buildings.

Book Synopsis Intelligent Building Control Systems by : John T. Wen

Download or read book Intelligent Building Control Systems written by John T. Wen. This book was released on 2017-12-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of this book will be shown how, with the adoption of ubiquituous sensing, extensive data-gathering and forecasting, and building-embedded advanced actuation, intelligent building systems with the ability to respond to occupant preferences in a safe and energy-efficient manner are becoming a reality. The articles collected present a holistic perspective on the state of the art and current research directions in building automation, advanced sensing and control, including: model-based and model-free control design for temperature control; smart lighting systems; smart sensors and actuators (such as smart thermostats, lighting fixtures and HVAC equipment with embedded intelligence); and energy management, including consideration of grid connectivity and distributed intelligence. These articles are both educational for practitioners and graduate students interested in design and implementation, and foundational for researchers interested in understanding the state of the art and the challenges that must be overcome in realizing the potential benefits of smart building systems. This edited volume also includes case studies from implementation of these algorithms/sensing strategies in to-scale building systems. These demonstrate the benefits and pitfalls of using smart sensing and control for enhanced occupant comfort and energy efficiency.
