Book excerpt: Between the end of the 19th century and the present day, roughly 2,000 postcards were produced depicting scenes and landmarks in the city of Shreveport and the surrounding area. Most of these were made and distributed during the golden age of postcards, from approximately 1905 through the 1920s. In all, more than half of Shreveport's 170-year history is represented on postcards. Ranging from advertising and promotional cards to scenic views and fold-out souvenirs, the cards showcased the community's growth and development.

Book Synopsis Legendary Locals of Shreveport by : Gary D. Joiner

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Shreveport written by Gary D. Joiner. This book was released on 2016-02-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legendary Locals of Shreveport chronicles fascinating people who have made a difference in the Shreveport-Bossier City area. Some are good, some are bad, and more than a few are wicked. There are movie starlets, entertainers, decorated war veterans, gangsters, preachers, madams, politicians, giants of industry, and humble folk who rose to greatness or infamy. Shreveport began as a rough and tumble frontier town that came late to being "civilized." A Baptist preacher shot one of Quantrill's Raiders when he rode his horse into church during a Sunday service. The most famous madam in the region was also a suffragette. The first successful bankers in Shreveport were immigrants from Prussia who developed a business model that extends into the modern era. Shreveport lost one quarter of its population in less than a month due to a yellow fever epidemic. And that is just the beginning.

Download or read book Memphis in Vintage Postcards written by Scott Faragher. This book was released on 2000. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcards are an important element of understanding our past, for they provide future generations a rare glimpse into a world that many times has disappeared under the aegis of expansion and progress. This book, containing over 175 vintage postcards, allows readers to see one of the South's most historic cities as it looked in the earlier part of the twentieth century--a time when the city was experiencing unparalleled growth. Memphis contains scenes of early river commerce, images of many historic hotels, such as the Peabody Hotel and Hotel Claridge, postcards of significant commercial buildings, as well as examples of the rapid development of downtown, showcasing Beale Street, Madison Avenue, and Main Street.
