Book Synopsis Generational Tensions and Solidarity Within Advanced Welfare States by : Asgeir Falch-Eriksen

Download or read book Generational Tensions and Solidarity Within Advanced Welfare States written by Asgeir Falch-Eriksen. This book was released on 2021-09-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores generation as both a reference to family or kinship structures, and a reference to cohorts or age sets. The principal objective is branching out this two-part concept through studies of tensions and solidarity within and between generations of advanced and robust welfare states. Answering key questions using multiple disciplinary approaches, the book considers how generations challenge advanced and robust welfare states; how new and young generations are affected by living in an advanced welfare state with older generations; how tensions or solidarity are understood when facing challenges; and what the key characteristics are of certain generation types. It contributes to the development of a more comprehensive generation approach within social sciences by developing the concept of generation by exploring different challenges to the welfare state such as migration, digitalization, environmental damages, demands for sustainability, and marginalization. Highlighting the escalating tensions and altered versions of solidarity between generations, this book shows how a comprehensive concept of a generation can create new insights into how we collectively coordinate and resolve challenges through the welfare state. It will be of interest to all scholars and students of social policy, sociology, political science, and social anthropology.

Book excerpt: The European Community has called 1993 "The European Year of the Elderly and the Solidarity of Generations". As a contribution to the EC program a conference was held at Utrecht, the Netherlands, on April 7 and 8, 1993. The conference looked at the dynamics of cohort and generations in the context of contemporary and future political problems. Solidarity of generations was not taken for granted but assessed. The papers presented at the conference have been brought together in this volume. The authors have revised their contributions since the conference, which was held under the auspices of the center for Population Studies, an initiative of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research.

Book Synopsis Solidarity Between the Sexes and the Generations by : Trudie Knijn

Download or read book Solidarity Between the Sexes and the Generations written by Trudie Knijn. This book was released on 2004. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines a theoretical and empirical cross-national perspective to examine how societal transformations in European welfare states affect patterns of solidarity between men and women, and across generations. The authors' research has highlighted substantial discrepancies in various countries between the assumptions made at the macro-level of social policy on family issues and the reality of women's and men's contributions at home. In countries where social policy relies on family solidarity as the main source of support, this may result in growing social inequality. Finally, the chapters reveal the crucial role of women in the transformation of family life and welfare state policy. These conclusions could have important ramifications for European welfare policy. The cross-national perspective allows for a detailed understanding of the similarities and differences between the various European countries and their policies. Solidarity Between the Sexes and the Generations will appeal to scholars and researchers of social policy, sociology and welfare as well as women and gender studies. Because of its comparative perspective the book is also of interest to those involved in developing social policy in European countries.
