Book excerpt: In Sexuality and the Rise of China Travis S. K. Kong examines the changing meanings of same-sex identities, communities, and cultures for young Chinese gay men in contemporary Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China. Drawing on ninety life stories, Kong’s transnational queer sociological approach shows the complex interplay between personal biography and the dramatically changing social institutions in these three societies. Kong conceptualizes coming out as relational politics and the queer/tongzhi community and commons as an affective, imaginative means of connecting, governed by homonormative masculinity. He shows how monogamy is a form of cruel optimism and envisions state and sexuality intertwining in different versions of homonationalism in each location. Tracing the alternately diverging and converging paths of being young, "Chinese," gay, and male, Kong reveals how both Western and emerging inter- and intra- Asian queer cultures shape queer/tongzhi experiences. Most significantly, at this historical juncture characterized by the rise of China, Kong criticizes the globalization of sexuality by emphasizing inter-Asia modeling, referencing, and solidarities and debunks the essentializing myth of Chineseness, thereby decolonizing Western sexual knowledge and demonstrating the differential meanings of Chineseness/queerness across the Sinophone world.

Book Synopsis Chinese Male Homosexualities by : Travis Kong

Download or read book Chinese Male Homosexualities written by Travis Kong. This book was released on 2010-07-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a groundbreaking exploration of masculinities and homosexualities amongst Chinese gay men. It provides a sociological account of masculinity, desire, sexuality, identity and citizenship in contemporary Chinese societies, and within the constellation of global culture. Kong reports the results of an extensive ethnographic study of contemporary Chinese gay men in a wide range of different locations including mainland China, Hong Kong and the Chinese overseas community in London, showing how Chinese gay men live their everyday lives. Relating Chinese male homosexuality to the extensive social and cultural theories on gender, sexuality and the body, postcolonialism and globalisation, the book examines the idea of queer space and numerous 'queer flows' – of capital, bodies, ideas, images, and commodities – around the world. The book concludes that different gay male identities – such as the conspicuously consuming memba in Hong Kong, the urban tongzhi, the 'money boy' in China and the feminised 'golden boy' in London – emerge in different locations, and are all caught up in the transnational flow of queer cultures which are at once local and global.

Book Synopsis Sexuality in China by : Howard Chiang

Download or read book Sexuality in China written by Howard Chiang. This book was released on 2018-06-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was sex like in China, from imperial times through the post-Mao era? The answer depends, of course, on who was having sex, where they were located in time and place, and what kind of familial, social, and political structures they participated in. This collection offers a variety of perspectives by addressing diverse topics such as polygamy, pornography, free love, eugenics, sexology, crimes of passion, homosexuality, intersexuality, transsexuality, masculine anxiety, sex work, and HIV/AIDS. Following a loose chronological sequence, the chapters examine revealing historical moments in which human desire and power dynamics came into play. Collectively, the contributors undertake a necessary historiographic intervention by reconsidering Western categorizations and exploring Chinese understandings of sexuality and erotic orientation.

Book excerpt: March 4, 2013 was the third trip to China, organized by The Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, in San Francisco, California. The first two were “good will tours,” with no agenda other than establishing friendships and collegiate collaboration. The current tour was a culmination of over two decades of work and negotiations to establish a Sexuality Institute in mainland China, further validated by the first Sino-US Sexuality Conference, with experts (as you will see) from both sides who travelled half way across the world and from all areas of China and Taiwan to present. This extraordinary vision of global sexual health, was the brainchild of one man, Dr. Ted McIlvenna. As we travelled on the bus from one brand new city to yet another - brand new - amazing city, it occurred to Beverley and I that a memorial of this momentous occasion should be created. An invitation was made to all the presenters “on the bus” to write their memories, thoughts and feelings about what this trip had meant to them. Each individual's only mandate was to keep in mind that this was to concentrate on our experiences from the trip to China, allowing in that format for each person's individual contribution to the wider field of Sexology, to express themselves. The following pages hold the unedited contributions of those who wanted to be a part of this gift to Dr. Ted and the Institute. What you will read will add to the recognition of an unparalleled man, a wealth of insights, historical reflections on a mysterious country, and the 'coup de gras' is the topic: The Sexual Evolution of Women in China.
