Book Synopsis A Cultural History of Sexuality in the Enlightenment by : Julie Peakman

Download or read book A Cultural History of Sexuality in the Enlightenment written by Julie Peakman. This book was released on 2014-03-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period between 1650 and 1820 new worlds of sex opened up. This was a pivotal time when old religious beliefs and medical theories about sexuality and the body clashed with innovatory ideas emerging from natural science and philosophy. In addition, a burgeoning print industry fed a rapidly expanding reading public with erotica. With the breakdown of old community networks and increased urbanization, authorities reacted to increased sexual license with a raft of new regulations designed to curtail variations in sexual behaviour. A Cultural History of Sexuality in the Enlightenment presents an overview of the period with essays on heterosexuality, homosexuality, sexual variations, religious and legal issues, health concerns, popular beliefs about sexuality, prostitution and erotica.

Book Synopsis Erotica and the Enlightenment by : Peter Wagner

Download or read book Erotica and the Enlightenment written by Peter Wagner. This book was released on 1991. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this collection focus on the relations between erotic, discourse and ideologies or -mentalites- in the Enlightenment. Although the contributors - literary historians, historians, and art historians - differ in approach and methodology, their common ground is the analysis of various genres of Enlightenment discourse on sex. There is a particular stress on popular writings (sex guides; obscene satire; graphic erotica), which have been neglected by literary historians, as well as on the iconographic discourse in works of art. Approaching eighteenth-century culture on such a broad basis, the essays try to retrieve parts of a -lost world-, i.e. the complicated relations between the literary and popular discourse, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the ideologies and -mentalites- contained in or opposed to this discourse. The contributions thus shed light on important aspects of an age which determined the modern period."
