Book Synopsis Sexual Types by : Mario DiGangi

Download or read book Sexual Types written by Mario DiGangi. This book was released on 2011-11-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual types on the early modern stage are at once strange and familiar, associated with a range of "unnatural" or "monstrous" sexual and gender practices, yet familiar because readily identifiable as types: recognizable figures of literary imagination and social fantasy. From the many found in early modern culture, Mario DiGangi here focuses on six types that reveal in particularly compelling ways, both individually and collectively, how sexual transgressions were understood to intersect with social, gender, economic, and political transgressions. Building on feminist and queer scholarship, Sexual Types demonstrates how the sodomite, the tribade (a woman-loving woman), the narcissistic courtier, the citizen wife, the bawd, and the court favorite function as sites of ideological contradiction in dramatic texts. On the one hand, these sexual types are vilified and disciplined for violating social and sexual norms; on the other hand, they can take the form of dynamic, resourceful characters who expose the limitations of the categories that attempt to define and contain them. In bringing sexuality and character studies into conjunction with one another, Sexual Types provides illuminating new readings of familiar plays, such as Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Winter's Tale, and of lesser-known plays by Fletcher, Middleton, and Shirley.

Book Synopsis When Your Sex Drives Don't Match by : Sandra Pertot

Download or read book When Your Sex Drives Don't Match written by Sandra Pertot. This book was released on 2007-02-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - What libido type are you?: People have different sexual tastes and preferences, which, according to Dr. Sandra Pertot, can be traced to 10 basic libido types--each with a unique set of feelings, desires, and expressions. By learning to recognize them, couples can better understand and work through their sexual conflicts. - A complete guide to a mutually satisfying sexual relationship: Once couples have identified their libido types, Pertot offers useful ways to manage sexual incompatibilities and, in most cases, achieve a mutually satisfying sex life. Her clear advice emphasizes a combination of increased communication, understanding of differences, and building upon previously established aspects of the relationship. - Authoritative information based on more than thirty years of clinical expertise: Pertot was compelled to write this book because in over thirty years of experience counseling couples, she's found that mismatched libidos is one of the most common issues with which couples struggle. She's learned to recognize that most sexual problems are not the result of complicated psychological or relationship issues, but rather have completely sensible causes that can be identified and worked out.

Book Synopsis Sexuality by : Susan Sprecher

Download or read book Sexuality written by Susan Sprecher. This book was released on 1993-03-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culling the vast literature on sexuality, this comprehensive volume offers a timely, readable, and multidisciplinary portrait of sexuality in close relationships. Sprecher and McKinney take an extensive look at current theory and research in sexually-based primary relationships, paying close attention to sexual attitudes, sexual behaviors, sexual satisfaction, and sexual coercion. They discuss sexual patterns in several types of sexual relationships--dating, cohabitating, marital, and homosexual--and show how sexual aspects of these relationships are related to other characteristics, like love and communication. The authors also explore sexual standards, predictors of sexual attraction, sexual scripts, the initiation of sex, negotiating safe-sex behaviors, and which types of couples are most sexually satisfied--and why. "This volume is a rich source of information about ways that sexuality is interrelated to relationship phenomenon. It provides a valuable historical perspective on selected issues by reviewing older, significant pieces of research. At the same time, recent and important studies on current topics, are included; thus, the book is solidly based on research findings. In addition, a number of important methodological issues are presented in a clear understandable manner throughout the chapters. This makes the book ideal for instructors who want to emphasize to students that how research is conducted is an important influence on what we know about sexuality. Moreover, the tone and the high quality of the writing make it ideal for use in upper division undergraduate courses and graduate seminars, or for scholars who want to familiarize themselves with this area of investigation. Finally, the authors are to be complimented on their inclusion of different types of relationships." --Journal of Marriage and the Family
