Book excerpt: POLYACETYLENE, (CH)x, is the simplest possible conjugated organic polymer and is therefore of special fundamental interest. It can be prepared in the form of lustrous, silvery, flexible, polycrystalline films having any desired cis/trans content by catalytic polymerization of gaseous acetylene, C2H2. The cis-rich films can be stretched easily at room temperature in excess of three times their original length with concomitant partial alignment of the (CH)x fibrils. Dark red gels of toluene in (CH)x may be prepared using a lower catalyst concentration. Highly porous, very low density, 'foam-like' (CH)x can be obtained from these gels. Both cis- and trans-(CH)x are p-type semiconductors which can be treated with a variety of p- or n-type dopants with concomitant increase in conductivity to give a series of semiconductors and ultimately, 'organic metals'. This report will be directed primarily towards a description of the more chemically oriented aspects of (CH)x and its derivatives. (Author).

Book Synopsis Synthesis and Properties of Semiconducting and Metallic Derivatives of Polyacetylene, (CH)x by : Alan G. MacDiarmid

Download or read book Synthesis and Properties of Semiconducting and Metallic Derivatives of Polyacetylene, (CH)x written by Alan G. MacDiarmid. This book was released on 1978. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyacetylene, (CH)x is the simplest organic polymer. Through chemical doping, the electrical conductivity of films of (CH)x can be varied over twelve orders of magnitude with properties ranging from insulator (sigma less than 10 to the minus 10 ohm to the minus 1 cm to the minus 1) to semiconductor to metal (sigma greater than 10 to the 3rd power ohm to the minus 1 cm to the minus 1). Both donors and acceptors can be used with these flexible, free-standing polycrystalline polymer films (thickness 10 to the minus 5 cm to 0.5 cm) to yield n-type or p-type material. In this review, we summarize some of the more important chemical and physical properties of (CH)x and its doped derivatives. (Author).

Book Synopsis Organic Metals and Semiconductors: The Chemistry of Polyacetylene, (CH)x, and Its Derivatives by : Alan G. MacDiarmid

Download or read book Organic Metals and Semiconductors: The Chemistry of Polyacetylene, (CH)x, and Its Derivatives written by Alan G. MacDiarmid. This book was released on 1979. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both cis- and trans-forms of polyacetylene, (CH)(x), may prepared as silvery, flexible polycrystalline, semiconducting films. The cis-films can be stretched to over three times their original length with partial alignment of the (CH)(x) fibrils. Through chemical or electrochemical doping, the electrical conductivity of the films can be increased over twelve orders of magnitude with properties ranging from insulator to semiconductor to metal. By the use of donors or acceptors, n-type or p-type polymer, respectively, is produced. Photoelectrochemical photovoltaic cells have been fabricated using (CH)(x) as the active photoelectrode.
