Book Synopsis Seeking Wisdom in Adult Teaching and Learning by : Wilma Fraser

Download or read book Seeking Wisdom in Adult Teaching and Learning written by Wilma Fraser. This book was released on 2017-10-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the pursuit of wisdom in education, and the argument that wisdom – personified here as Sophia – is tragically marginalised or absent in current Western epistemological discourses. It includes a review of key historical and classical framings which have lost much potency and relevance as certain cultural narratives hold sway; these include the reductionist, technicist and highly instrumentalist discourses which shape the articulation and delivery of much education policy and practice, whilst reflecting similar troubling framings from broader neoliberal perspectives. Fraser argues that wisdom’s marginalisation has had, and continues to have, profoundly deleterious consequences for our educative practices. Through a compelling combination of narrative and autoethnographic techniques, while also drawing on philosophical and cultural traditions, the book pushes at the boundaries of emerging knowledge, including how knowledge is generated. It will be of interest to those who facilitate the learning of adults in a variety of settings as well as to students and supervisors seeking exemplars and 'justification' for working in non-traditional ways.

Book excerpt: Delve into the nature and mystery of wisdom in adult education, and what it might mean for the practice of adult education in the complexity of changing times. This issue begins with a look at the nature of wisdom, the wisdom of nature, and how it relates to current issues in the field of adult education. It then looks to neuroscience and the evolution of sacred knowing to explore the connection between learning and wisdom. Covering transcendent and practical wisdom, the issue then draws on Eastern, Western, and Mideastern cultural and religious perspectives to develop a fuller understanding of wisdom. Finally, it covers the aspects of gender and/or culture in relation to wisdom, though in quite different ways. This is the 131st volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, this indispensable series explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of adult and continuing education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.

Book Synopsis Adult Learning in a Migration Society by : Chad Hoggan

Download or read book Adult Learning in a Migration Society written by Chad Hoggan. This book was released on 2021-12-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration is an old, perhaps perpetual, phenomenon. Currently, it is an urgent challenge involving huge numbers of people who leave their home in search of a better life. Differences in language, customs, and norms are often joined by specific manifestations of xenophobia born of particular differences between host countries and their current influx of migrants. In a pronounced way, then, migration reveals important societal questions・of solidarity, of identity, of transition and transformation, of human rights and obligations. The explorations in this collection highlight individual stories of migrants, showcase innovative research methods, and explore concepts and theories that might be usefully applied toward learning needs in a migration society. Including insights from scholars across 14 different countries, this book offers an international perspective on the role of adult education in addressing migration. Such international comparisons hold great potential for seeing new possibilities in any single country, whether in Europe, North America, or across the world.

Book Synopsis Developing Transformative Spaces in Higher Education by : Sue Jackson

Download or read book Developing Transformative Spaces in Higher Education written by Sue Jackson. This book was released on 2018-03-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education has been presented as a solution to a host of local and global problems, despite the fact that learning and assessment can also be used as mechanisms for exclusion and social control. Developing Transformative Spaces in Higher Education: Learning to Transgress demonstrates that even when knowledge may appear to be the solution, it can be partial and disempowering to all but the dominant groups. The book shows the need to contest such knowledge claims and to learn to transgress, rather than to conform. It argues that transformative spaces need to be found and that these should be about the creation of new opportunities, ways of knowing and ways of being. Working in and through spaces of transgression, the contributors to this volume develop frameworks for the possibilities of transformative spaces in learning and teaching in higher education. The book critiques the ways in which Western higher education culture determines the academic agenda in relation to dialogue on social differences, minority groups and hierarchical structures, including issues of representation among different groups in the population. It also explores the personal and political costs of transgression and outlines ways in which transitions can be transformative. The book should be of interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students engaged in the study of higher education, education studies, teacher training, social justice and transformation. It should also be essential reading for practitioners working in post-compulsory education.

Book Synopsis Transforming Perspectives in Lifelong Learning and Adult Education by : Laura Formenti

Download or read book Transforming Perspectives in Lifelong Learning and Adult Education written by Laura Formenti. This book was released on 2018-09-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the AAACE Cyril O. Houle Award This book constructs a deepening, interdisciplinary understanding of adult learning and imaginatively reframes its transformative aspects. The authors explore the tension at the heart of current understanding of ‘transformative’ adult learning: that while it can be framed as both easy and imperative, personal transformation is in fact rooted in the context in which we live, our stories and relationships. At its core, transformation is never easy – nor always desirable – and the authors thus draw on interdisciplinary and auto/biographical inquiry to explore what it means to change our presuppositions and frames of meaning that guide our thinking. Using their linguistic, gendered, academic and cultural differences, the authors illuminate how the social, contextual, cultural, cognitive and psychological dimensions of transformation intertwine. In doing so, they emphasise the importance of transformation as a contingent struggle for meaning and recognition, social justice, fraternity, and the pursuit of truth. This engaging book will be of interest to students and scholars of transformative learning and education.
