Book excerpt: Seeds of Glory is the story of a young Sudanese man growing up in the midst of his country's civil war, while harboring dreams of becoming an NBA player. Nhaildeng is born the son of a Mujhang tribal chief. At his birth, the local witch doctor predicts that he will become a great chief and lead his people to glory. One day Nhaildeng must leave his village and travel north to attend school. It is here at Rumbek School that Nhaildeng opens up a new chapter in his life. Eventually he transfers to Khartoum University where, along with his cousin, Nhaildeng becomes one of the stars of his college basketball team. It is at this time that he converts to Islam. It seems that Nhaildeng may really be on track to realizing his dreams of becoming a pro basketball player. However when the army attacks and destroys his village, he must return south to help his people. With the chief dead and many of the village's leaders, including his father, sentenced to life in prison, the mantle of leadership falls at Nhaildeng's feet.
