Book excerpt: On May 2, 2009, the Australian Department of Defence released its Defence White Paper which contains a strong focus on Asia-Pacific security. A salient theme found throughout this White Paper is the effect that the rise of China will have on security in the Asia-Pacific region, the global distribution of power and resultantly on Australia's strategic interests. This paper demonstrates how the evolving security environment in the Asia-Pacific region and the rise of China are key factors in the formulation of this new White Paper and concludes with an examination of Canada's current perspective on Asia-Pacific security as it relates to its own security priorities.

Book Synopsis Critical security in the Asia-Pacific by : Anthony Burke

Download or read book Critical security in the Asia-Pacific written by Anthony Burke. This book was released on 2021-06-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of 9/11, the Asian crisis and the 2004 tsunami, traditional analytical frameworks are increasingly unable to explain how individuals and communities are rendered insecure, or advance individual, global or environmental security. In the Asia-Pacific, the accepted wisdom of realism has meant that analyses rarely move beyond the statist, militarist and exclusionary assumptions that underpin traditional realpolitik. This innovative new book challenges these limitations and addresses the missing problems, people and vulnerabilities of the Asia-Pacific region. It also turns a critical eye on traditional interstate strategic dynamics. Critical security in the Asia-Pacific applies both a critical theoretical approach that interrogates the deeper assumptions underpinning security discourses, and a human-centred policy approach that focuses on the security, welfare and emancipation of individuals and communities. Leading Asia-Pacific researchers combine to apply these frameworks to the most pressing issues in the region, from the Korean peninsula to environmental change, Indonesian conflict, the ‘war on terror’ and the plight of refugees. The result is a sophisticated and accessible account of often-neglected realities of marginalization in the region, and a compelling argument for the empowerment and security of the most vulnerable.

Book Synopsis The Asia-Pacific Security Lexicon by : David H. Capie

Download or read book The Asia-Pacific Security Lexicon written by David H. Capie. This book was released on 2002. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the turbulent decade since the ending of the Cold War in Europe, a new element of the international relations of Asia and the Pacific has been the emergence of multilateral security dialogues. Both in governmental arenas such as the ASEAN Regional Forum and numerous "track two" channels including the Council for Security Co-operation in Asia-Pacific, it has been a decade of creative interaction and new thinking. The Asia-Pacific Security Lexicon identifies the key phrases and ideas that have been the foundation of these dialogues, looking at their origins in international diplomacy and tracing their specific adaptation and modification to the conditions of a trans-Pacific setting. Of interest to both theoreticians and practitioners, the Lexicon is at once a handbook for regional diplomacy and an assessment of the factors that have shaped regional discussions.

Book excerpt: In 2002 Pres. George W. Bush proclaimed that the twenty-first century would be the "Asia-Pacific Century." While I am not sure he was the first person to use that phrase-and it has been often used by others over the past 10 years-for those of us who study the region and/or have more than a casual familiarity with the region, the proclamation rings true. In a November 2011 article in Foreign Policy magazine, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton went so far as to say, "The future of politics will be decided in Asia, not Afghanistan or Iraq, and the United States will be right at the center of the action." These are powerful words, underscoring the fact that Asia matters, and it matters a great deal. For those who are interested in national security affairs, the question is not whether Asia matters but what our country should do about the fact that Asia matters. How should we posture ourselves to best advance our national interests in a region that will have so much to do with our future security and prosperity?
