Book Synopsis Search for New Physics in Same-Sign Dilepton Events in the CMS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider by : Lana Muniz

Download or read book Search for New Physics in Same-Sign Dilepton Events in the CMS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider written by Lana Muniz. This book was released on 2014. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CMS results of a new physics search in same-sign dilepton events with b-tagged jets and missing transverse energy (MET) are being presented. These results cover the full 2012 dataset from the LHC at root(s)=8 TeV, corresponding to 19.5/fb. Isolated same-sign dilepton events are easily detected and rare in the Standard Model (SM), but they occur in abundance in some supersymmetry (SUSY) models. Hence, this channel provides a very clean, low background, search for new physics. Multiple search regions defined by the observables MET, hadronic energy (HT), and number of b-tagged jets are considered. The data agrees with the SM prediction, therefore exclusion limits at 95% C.L. are presented for various simplified SUSY models.

Book Synopsis A Search for New Physics in Events with a Leptonically Decaying Z Boson and a Large Transverse Momentum Imbalance with the CMS Detector at the LHC by : Nicholas Charles Smith

Download or read book A Search for New Physics in Events with a Leptonically Decaying Z Boson and a Large Transverse Momentum Imbalance with the CMS Detector at the LHC written by Nicholas Charles Smith. This book was released on 2018. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for new physics in events with a leptonically decaying Z boson and a large transverse momentum imbalance in proton-proton collisions collected at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV in 2016 with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. The results of this search are interpreted in terms of a simplified model of dark matter production via spin-0 or spin-1 mediators, a scenario with a standard-model-like Higgs boson produced in association with the Z boson and decaying invisibly, a model of unparticle production, and a model with large extra spatial dimensions. No significant deviations from the background expectations are found, and limits are set on relevant model parameters, significantly extending the results previously achieved in this channel.

Book Synopsis Search for Higgs Boson Pair Production in the bb̅ τ+ τ- Decay Channel by : Luca Cadamuro

Download or read book Search for Higgs Boson Pair Production in the bb̅ τ+ τ- Decay Channel written by Luca Cadamuro. This book was released on 2018-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents innovative contributions to the CMS experiment in the new trigger system for the restart of the LHC collisions in Run II, as well as original analysis methods and important results that led to official publications of the Collaboration. The author's novel reconstruction algorithms, deployed on the Field-Programmable Gate Arrays of the new CMS trigger architecture, have brought a gain of over a factor 2 in efficiency for the identification of tau leptons, with a very significant impact on important H boson measurements, such as its decays to tau lepton pairs and the search for H boson pair production. He also describes a novel analysis of HH → bb tautau, a high priority physics topic in a difficult channel. The original strategy, optimisation of event categories, and the control of the background have made the result one of the most sensitive concerning the self-coupling of the Higgs boson among all possible channels at the LHC.

Download or read book Electroweak Physics at the Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS Detector written by Elodie Resseguie. This book was released on 2020-11-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses searches for electroweakly produced supersymmetric partners of the gauge and the Higgs bosons (gauginos and higgsinos) decaying to multiple leptons, using pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV. The thesis presents an in-depth study of multiple searches, as well as the first 13 TeV cross section measurement for the dominant background in these searches, WZ production. Two searches were performed using 36.1/fb of data: the gaugino search, which makes use of a novel kinematic variable, and the higgsino search, which produced the first higgsino limits at the LHC. A search using 139/fb of data makes use of a new technique developed in this thesis to cross check an excess of data above the background expectation in a search using a Recursive Jigsaw Reconstruction technique. None of the searches showed a significant excess of data, and limits were expanded with respect to previous results. These searches will benefit from the addition of luminosity during HL-LHC; however, the current detector will not be able to withstand the increase in radiation. Electronics for the detector upgrade are tested and irradiated to ensure their performance.

Download or read book Experimental Methods to Measure Standard Model Backgrounds to New Physics Searches Using the CMS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider written by James Michael Lamb. This book was released on 2009. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland will produce proton-proton collisions of higher energy than ever before achieved an a laboratory. This thesis describes some of the experimental aspects of hadron collider physics, including the construction of the CMS detector which used to observe the collisions, and the interpretation of measurement results in light of challenging backgrounds. The focus of this this document is the development of a method to use high energy photon events in collider data to estimate the invisible Z background to a search for supersymmetric particles in the MET plus jets topology. A detailed study of the mechanisms by which quark and gluon scattering events can produce the signatures of electrons is presented. The process of the construction of the outer barrel of the silicon charged-particle tracker of CMS is described.
