Book excerpt: Jasna Dragovi -Soso asks why this strong and apparently democratic opposition movement subsequently turned towards an extreme form of nationalism and had by the end of the 1980s accepted Miloševi 's undemocratic policies. Based on the author's extensive primary source research and interviews with key protagonists, Saviours of the Nation examines both the causes and the consequences of the opposition's transformation into a nationalist force. Highlighting the role of historical context, it argues that three main factors contributed to the intellectuals' elaboration of a radical nationalist ideology: abandonment of cultural "Yugoslavism" in conjunction with the post-Tito crisis of the state, difficulties in solving the thorny "Kosovo question," and relationships between the dissidents and their Slovenian counterparts. Soso also includes a thorough analysis of the "Memorandum" of the Serbian Academy and the intellectuals' relations with Miloševi . She argues that the intellectual opposition's search for Serbian statehood at any price undermined its ability to present a convincing political alternative, allowing the regime to overcome its crisis of legitimacy and continue its reckless and belligerent policies.

Book Synopsis Saviours of the Nation? by : Jasna Dragović-Soso

Download or read book Saviours of the Nation? written by Jasna Dragović-Soso. This book was released on 2002. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yugoslavia's breakup in 1991, and the wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo that followed in its wake, have been widely blamed on Serbian nationalism. Most analyses have not examined this nationalism in the years before Slobodan Miloševićs' rise to power, when its principal articulators were dissident intellectuals. This book traces the trajectory of intellectual opposition to Serbian nationalism from its origins in the 1950s to its consolidation in the 1980s, arguing that the acceptance of Milošević's undemocratic approach to the national question undermined the intellectual opposition's ability to present a convincing political alternative and was crucial in allowing the regime to continue. -- book cover.

Book Synopsis Usable History? by : Tea Sindbæk

Download or read book Usable History? written by Tea Sindbæk. This book was released on 2012-10-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Yugoslavia was invaded by Nazi Germany and its allies in April 1941, what followed was as much a Yugoslav civil war as a war of occupation and liberation. Several hundred-thousand Yugoslav civilians were killed by other Yugoslavs in large-scale massacres or concentration camps, and the horrific events left the country ruined and deeply divided. Usable History? examines the way in which the history of Yugoslavia's internal problematic past was presented and used politically and ideologically, and asks how a society can cope with such an "unmasterable" history. How did Yugoslav historians and politicians represent and explain their own history and how did these representations interact with the cultural developments, political demands and societal needs? By investigating political documents, historiography and popular representations of history such as films, songs and literature, the book's author reveals a deeply disturbing narrative of historical (mis)inter-pretation and (mis)use.
