Book excerpt: This historical novel includes adventure and romantic triangle between a Colonial planter's daughter Kathryn and two suitors, Martin a Patriot and Loyalist Brent during the American War for Independence. Other characters include a dynamic multiracial girl, Sky, who is so poor she has no last name. Sky is orphaned when drunken seamen slaughter her mother and father, owner of a liquor still and pimp for her mother. She is left with only the clothes on her back and her grandmother's black voodoo teachings. She survives by murder and selling herself into slavery. Although love eludes her she pursues happiness in her own rainbow and her child. Nicole of Philadelphia creates a minor, second and scandalous triangle with her obsession to marry the Caldwell family's fortune and elegant mansion. Based on the era's factual history the story begins in Savannah but moves to Charleston, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Paris and London. Others also sell themselves. One, a Minister's daughter to escape her strict parents becomes pregnant by a militiaman who is killed in an Indian skirmish. Brent marries an Indian of high status in his need for Indian support in coming battles. Seldom has a romantic historical novel contained so much valid military action (see customer reviews, Amazon). Thus it appeals to all. In Charleston, the largest US surrender until World War II, marks the low point of the Patriot's cause. Eventually characters travel to Europe. Surprisingly London is a lively place either because of or in spite of England's loss. Threads of the inequality of women and the coming War Between the States are clearly exposed even at this early time. There is a similarity between these characters and the colonies gnawing the umbilical cord that binds them to mother England.

Book Synopsis Victory at Yorktown by : Richard M. Ketchum

Download or read book Victory at Yorktown written by Richard M. Ketchum. This book was released on 2014-08-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From "the finest historian of the American Revolution"(Douglas Brinkley) comes Richard M. Ketchum's Victory at Yorktown, the definitive account of the battle and unlikely triumph that led to American independence. In 1780, during the Revolutionary War, George Washington's army lay idle for want of supplies, food, and money. All hope seemed lost until a powerful French force landed at Newport in July. Then, under Washington's directives, Nathanael Greene began a series of hit-and-run operations against the British. The damage the guerrilla fighters inflicted would help drive the enemy to Yorktown, where Greene and Lafayette would trap them before Washington and Rochambeau, supported by the French fleet, arrived to deliver the coup de grâce. Richard M. Ketchum illuminates, for the first time, the strategies and heroic personalities--American and French--that led to the surprise victory, only the second major battle the Americans would win in almost seven horrific years. Relying on good fortune, daring, and sheer determination never to give up, American and French fighters--many of whom walked from Newport and New York to Virginia--brought about that rarest of military operations: a race against time and distance, on land and at sea. Ketchum brings to life the gripping and inspirational story of how the rebels defeated the world's finest army against all odds.

Download or read book Women in the American Revolution written by Sudie Doggett Wike. This book was released on 2018-02-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without the support of American women, victory in the Revolutionary War would not have been possible. They followed the Continental Army, handling a range of jobs that were usually performed by men. On the orders of General Washington, some were hired as nurses for $2 per month and one full ration per day--disease was rampant and nurse mortality was high. A few served with artillery units or masqueraded as men to fight in the ranks. The author focuses on the many key roles women filled in the struggle for independence, from farming to making saltpeter to spying.
