Book Synopsis Sand Dune Conservation, Management and Restoration by : J. Patrick Doody

Download or read book Sand Dune Conservation, Management and Restoration written by J. Patrick Doody. This book was released on 2012-09-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the development of temperate coastal sand dunes and the way these have been influenced by human activity. The different states in which the habitat exists both for the beach/foredune and inland dune are reviewed against the pressures exerted upon them. Options for management are considered and the likely consequences of taking a particular course of action highlighted. These options include traditional approaches to the conservation and management of wildlife and landscapes as well as habitat restoration. The way the value of the areas changes under different management regimes is considered mainly from an environmental perspective. Consideration is given to new approaches to management and restoration including adopting a more dynamic approach. Audience This book will be of interest to academics, students and professionals concerned with policy formulation and /or actively managing coastal areas.

Book Synopsis Restoration of Coastal Dunes by : Luisa M Martínez

Download or read book Restoration of Coastal Dunes written by Luisa M Martínez. This book was released on 2013-01-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuously growing human population along the world’s coasts will exacerbate the impact of human activities on all coastal environments. Restoration activities will therefore become increasingly important. In particular, sandy shores and coastal dunes will require significant restoration efforts because they are preferred sites for human settlement, industrial and urban development and tourism. With this book experts in the field present a comprehensive review of restoration studies and activities, where ‘successful’ and ‘failed’ studies or approaches from around the world are contrasted and compared. A major asset the book provides is a compendium of studies showing that coastal dune restoration has many definitions and thus leads to many different actions. This volume addresses those with an interest in conservation ecology and biology, coastal dune dynamics and geomorphology, and coastal management who are seeking information on the different strategies for coastal dune restoration applied in different regions of the world. Finally, it will be a valuable resource for coastal scientists and planners, as well as for local and state officials, residents of coastal communities, environmental advocates and developers.

Book Synopsis Beach and Dune Restoration by : Karl F. Nordstrom

Download or read book Beach and Dune Restoration written by Karl F. Nordstrom. This book was released on 2021-12-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition - now with Nancy Jackson as a co-author - continues the themes of the first edition: the need to restore the biodiversity, ecosystem health, and ecosystem services provided by coastal landforms and habitats, especially in the light of climate change. The second edition reports on progress made on practices identified in the first edition, presents additional case studies, and addresses new and emerging issues. It analyzes the tradeoffs involved in restoring beaches and dunes - especially on developed coasts - the most effective approaches to use, and how stakeholders can play an active role. The concept of restoration is broad, and includes physical, ecological, economic, social, and ethical principles and ideals. The book will be valuable for coastal scientists, engineers, planners, and managers, as well as shorefront residents. It will also serve as a useful supplementary reference textbook in courses dealing with issues of coastal management and ecology.

Book Synopsis Long-term Community Stability and Biodiversity Trends in Coastal Sand Dunes by : Tania L.F. Bird

Download or read book Long-term Community Stability and Biodiversity Trends in Coastal Sand Dunes written by Tania L.F. Bird. This book was released on 2020. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dune Nature Reserve (NDNR), Israel. Increases in dune fixation over the last 60 years may be negatively impacting these species. The Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER)project in NDNR has been monitoring biodiversity across four major taxonomic groups (plants, arthropods, reptiles and rodents) for the past 12 years, in dunes of various fixation states, making it possible to examine the biodiversity trends in response to shrub encroachment across multiple taxa. Shrub encroachment has been documented over the past few decades in the reserve, reducing the prevalence of mobile dunes in the reserve(Levin & Ben-Dor 2004). In response to growing concerns of the consequences of dune fixation on biodiversity, Nizzanim LTER implemented two vegetation removal experiments, and concurrently have been monitoring off-road vehicle disturbance. This has provided an excellent opportunity to investigate the effect of disturbance on temporal dune biodiversity dynamics as a potential restoration tool.
