Book Synopsis Sanctuary? (Routledge Revivals) by : Catherine Panich

Download or read book Sanctuary? (Routledge Revivals) written by Catherine Panich. This book was released on 2012-09-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ten years immediately following the Second World War, some 170 000 immigrants from Europe and Britain arrived in Australia. First published in 1988, this unique book recreates the experiences of those who fled a ravaged Europe to seek a new life in far-distant Australia. Their stories are told in the words of the people themselves, supplemented with photographs, documents, press reports and memorabilia. These stories of over 100 Australians, New and Old, stories sometimes humorous and often very moving, provide a fascinating insight into a significant moment in Australian history. As the first definitive examination of life in the migrant camps, it documents a part of Australian history in danger of vanishing without trace. Never before has there been such a collection of intensely personal accounts of what it was like to pass through the immigration centres and workers’ hostels on the way to building new lives – and to shaping present-day Australia.

Book Synopsis Argos and the Argolid (Routledge Revivals) by : Richard A Tomlinson

Download or read book Argos and the Argolid (Routledge Revivals) written by Richard A Tomlinson. This book was released on 2014-06-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argos and the Argolid, first published in 1972, presents a study of the history and achievements of the Argives, who have hitherto been largely neglected: partly because Classical Argos is overshadowed by the legends of an earlier millennium, and partly because many of her monuments and records have been lost. Richard Tomlinson describes the region, and considers the relationship between the Argives who claimed Dorian descent and those whose ancestors were in all probability the inhabitants of the region during the Bronze Age. In particular, he emphasises the Argives’ role as a ‘third force’ in mainland Greek history, where they challenged the supremacy of the Spartans in Peloponnesian affairs. This thorough treatment is intended to correct the usual bias in favour of the better documented affairs of Athens and Sparta. It includes an assessment of Argive military and political organisation, and of their contribution to the arts of Ancient Greece.

Book Synopsis The Tudor Law of Treason (Routledge Revivals) by : John Bellamy

Download or read book The Tudor Law of Treason (Routledge Revivals) written by John Bellamy. This book was released on 2013-10-18. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title, first published in 1979, was ground-breaking in its exploration of the understudied area of the Tudor law of treason. Bellamy first examines the scope of that law, noting the inheritance from the Middle Ages, the effectiveness of the new statutes and interpretation of the law by the judiciary. Mining the archives for official, legal and literary accounts, the following parts consider how the government came to hear of traitors, the use of evidence and witnesses in trials and finally the fate of the traitor at the gallows and beyond. This is a full, useful and interesting title, which will be of great value to students researching Tudor and late medieval statute law, the Tudor concept of treason and the mores of Tudor society.
