Book Synopsis Sacramento's Midtown by : Sacramento Archives and Museum Collection Center

Download or read book Sacramento's Midtown written by Sacramento Archives and Museum Collection Center. This book was released on 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Sacramento's neighborhoods grew eastward from Fifteenth Street to Thirty-first Street (later Alhambra Boulevard), the area evolved into a complex mix of housing and businesses known as Midtown. Sutter's Fort was still popular, and community groups like the Native Sons of the Golden West restored its last remnants for future generations. In 1927, the city built Memorial Auditorium, a tribute to fallen soldiers, as a large central venue that continues to serve as an important setting for graduations, concerts, and conventions. The J and K Street business corridors expanded from downtown, and identifiable neighborhoods such as Poverty Ridge, Boulevard Park, and New Era Park developed as people settled and established businesses in these growing areas. Today's Midtown supports numerous Victorian mansions and Craftsman bungalows, as well as the legacies of such employers as the California Almond Growers' Exchange, California Packing Corporation, Buffalo Brewery, Sutter Hospital, and the Sacramento Bee newspaper.

Book Synopsis Midtown Sacramento by : William Burg

Download or read book Midtown Sacramento written by William Burg. This book was released on 2014-09-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though once scheduled for demolition, Midtown Sacramento battled back to become the city's geographic and cultural center--a beacon for offbeat artists, progressive thinkers and independent spirits. This eclectic neighborhood made history through social progress and artistic innovation. Through the hippie counterculture of the 1960s, the irreverent power of punk rock in the 1970s and '80s and the social and political consciousness of Generation X in the 1990s and beyond, Midtown always led the way. Now Sacramento historian and Midtown resident William Burg tells the story of the diverse generations of Sacramentans who shaped this trailblazing neighborhood.

Book excerpt: In the 1890s, the Sacramento Electric Power and Light Company extended streetcar tracks eastward, thereby creating a suburban oasis that developers Charles Wright and Howard Kimbrough sold as "just a 15 minute ride from downtown." Today's East Sacramento boasts some of the more desirable real estate in and around California's capital city, including McKinley Park and the "Fabulous Forties," a collection of upscale homes from 40th to 49thStreets--where Ronald Reagan resided when he was governor. Also located in East Sacramento is the campus of California State University, Sacramento, where a young Tom Hanks got his start in The Cherry Orchard.
