Book Synopsis Rooster's Voice by : Adriana Mull-Pernetz

Download or read book Rooster's Voice written by Adriana Mull-Pernetz. This book was released on 2020-11-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life at the farm is full of joy. Rooster is a great friend to every animal, and his friendliness to all makes every day beautiful. One day Rooster goes away. Rooster's friends learn that love can leave a sweet memory in their hearts. They understand that all those who have been truly loved become a part of us. Adriana Pernetz has a degree in Pedagogical Sciences from La Universidad Catolica Andres Bello in Caracas, Venezuela and a Master's degree in Bilingual Education from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She has taught elementary school for 23 years and lives in Allen, Texas with "the boys" and "the dog". She presently teaches 2nd-grade dual language at Centerville Elementary GISD, Texas. Her debut book, Once in a Forest was published 2018 and won a Pinnacle Book Achievement Award in the category of children's interest. I loved the ending of this book, as it expressed a way for people to remember their loved ones while also being able to move on. This book demonstrates that people who have lost loved ones must find a balance between being sad and remembering them and learning to be happy without them. This is a beautiful, bittersweet book that presents the topic of grief in an easy-to-process format for younger readers. It's a hard topic to write about, especially for younger readers, but this book does a great job showing in the process of grief and acceptance.

Book Synopsis The Holy League of Rudy by : Barton McGuire

Download or read book The Holy League of Rudy written by Barton McGuire. This book was released on 2018-10-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fats’ mother names him Ian Wendell Thomas at birth, something his friends correct in early childhood. A true connoisseur of the finer things (women, beer, music, food, general self-indulgence, women), Fats leaves school behind as soon as possible and devotes his time to, well, the finer things. The central California coast of the aimless 1970s is the perfect place for such devotions. His friends (who call themselves the Holy League of Rudy) invoke the dying spirit of ‘60s activism by daring to deface the grotesque new downtown mall, delaying its bicentennial grand opening and costing its owners millions. Not long after the mall raid, Fats falls for and marries Amanda, achingly beautiful heiress to the largest family-owned vineyards in California. Nothing is ever simple, however. Amanda’s father, unaware of Fats’ past crimes, is also the primary investor in the afore-mentioned mall, and a man whose dangerous displeasure only a fool would willingly invite. When the marriage goes south, Fats finds himself on the Z-list of the brutal neighborhood mafia, forcing the Holy League to fight back with the most vicious weapon at their disposal: unrelenting, irresistible mirth.

Book Synopsis Surviving Autocracy by : Masha Gessen

Download or read book Surviving Autocracy written by Masha Gessen. This book was released on 2021-06-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When Gessen speaks about autocracy, you listen.” —The New York Times “A reckoning with what has been lost in the past few years and a map forward with our beliefs intact.” —Interview As seen on MSNBC’s Morning Joe and heard on NPR’s All Things Considered: the bestselling, National Book Award–winning journalist offers an essential guide to understanding, resisting, and recovering from the ravages of our tumultuous times. This incisive book provides an essential guide to understanding and recovering from the calamitous corrosion of American democracy over the past few years. Thanks to the special perspective that is the legacy of a Soviet childhood and two decades covering the resurgence of totalitarianism in Russia, Masha Gessen has a sixth sense for the manifestations of autocracy—and the unique cross-cultural fluency to delineate their emergence to Americans. Gessen not only anatomizes the corrosion of the institutions and cultural norms we hoped would save us but also tells us the story of how a short few years changed us from a people who saw ourselves as a nation of immigrants to a populace haggling over a border wall, heirs to a degraded sense of truth, meaning, and possibility. Surviving Autocracy is an inventory of ravages and a call to account but also a beacon to recovery—and to the hope of what comes next.
