Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rock Gardens How to Make and Maintain Them A word of introduction seems needed to explain the purpose of this book. N o branch of horticulture at the present time occupies so much general attention as rock-gardening. Yet not a single book deals with the subject of the cost, which I have attempted to estimate, basing it on my own practical experience. It is super uous to observe that I have not aspired to any literary graces, but merely to tell simply what I believe to be needed. My aim has been to provide a practical volume which will enable anyone to make and plant a rock garden. When making my own, I know What I had to find out for myself, and in the following pages my endeavour has been to save others the trouble. If I may occasion ally seem to repeat myself, it is because I wish. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Rock-Garden Nowadays it is, indeed, becoming for a new 'gardening book to slink into the world under cover of an apology; and it had been my intention to plead, in excuse, that this volume of mine held no presumptuous notion of giving help to any rival gardener (for all true gardeners are rivals). I see, however, that such a plea would at once make publication a mere impertinence. There fore I will frankly hope that some of my readers may consider this book's existence justified by the help it gives them. But if some are inclined to resent the appearance of yet another work on gardening, others may well cavil, I fear, at its confessed incompleteness and inadequacy. To these I plead that only the most stringent considerations of 'space could have compelled the many omissions that they will mark in my pages. I had originally dealt faithfully with all my plants, and if any reader now vainly search this book for a detailed treatment of Aethionema, Silene, Lychnis, Veronica, and many another treasure, let him blame not me, but the pitiless blue pencil that made such a massacre of the innocents. Faced by cruel alternatives, I chose rather. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Rock Gardening for Amateurs (Classic Reprint) written by H. H. Thomas. This book was released on 2018-03-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rock Gardening for Amateurs 0 have written a book on rock gardening for amateurs a few years ago would probably have proved futile, since comparatively few amateurs were interested. They were indifferent because ignorant of the charms and the possibilities of rockeries, and of the adaptability of alpine plants. The present popularity of rock gardening, and its wide appeal to all classes of flower lovers, are due to the fact that amateurs have begun to realise that the miniature plants from the high mountains and it is for their accommodation that rock gardens are made - are intensely fascinating, and, on the whole, easy to grow. This result is doubtless owing in great degree to the discovery of new and beautiful kinds, and to the prominence given to rock plants at flower shows throughout the country. However this may be, rock gardening enjoys far greater popularity now than ever before, and garden lovers have found that a simple rockery can be just as delightful as an elaborate one. Alpine flowers should make an especial appeal to the possessor of a small garden, for it is possible to grow so many of them in a restricted area. Quite a small rockery will accommodate from one to two hundred alpines, and the more kinds one grows, the greater is the enjoyment; they vary so remarkably in growth, in form and colour of leaf and blossom, and in their needs. As to afford unending delight to the gardener. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
