Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rob Roy, Vol. 1 A collector of first editions of Sir Walter Scott's novels may, perchance, be bewildered by the persistence with which 'Rob Roy' is made to follow 'The Antiquary' in later issues of the Waverley novels. It was published in 1818, and its title page ran as follows: - "Rob Roy, by the Author of 'Waverley, ' 'Guy Mannering, ' and 'The Antiquary.' In three volumes, Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne & Co., for Archibald Constable & Co., Edinburgh, and Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, London: 1818." Nothing is said about the 'Tales of my Landlord, ' collected and arranged by Jedediah Cleishbotham, which came after 'The Antiquary' but did not bear the imprint of Constable and Longman but of Blackwood and John Murray. The circumstance which led Scott to leave Constable is too long and too financially complicated a story to tell here. Suffice that Sir Walter was not sorry to bewilder his contemporaries still more by starting yet another Unknown into the field, in the person of the supposed Jedediah Cleishbotham, whose two stories, 'Old Mortality' and 'The Black Dwarf, ' appeared in 1816, not many months after 'The Antiquary.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rob Roy, Vol. 1 of 3 When the Editor of the following volumes published, about two years since, the work called "The Antiquary," he announced that he was, for the last time, intruding upon the public in his present capacity. He might shelter himself under the plea, that every anonymous writer is, like the celebrated Junius, only a phantom, land that therefore, although an apparition of a more benign, as well as much meaner description, he cannot be bound to plead to a charge of inconsistency. Book excerpt: Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet FRSE (15 August 1771 - 21 September 1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, poet and historian. Many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Old Mortality, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. Although primarily remembered for his extensive literary works and his political engagement, Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession, and throughout his career combined his writing and editing work with his daily occupation as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire.
