Book Synopsis Rigs and Reefs by : U. S. Department U.S. Department of the Interior

Download or read book Rigs and Reefs written by U. S. Department U.S. Department of the Interior. This book was released on 2015-06-22. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proximity of the two Rigs to Reefs projects and an operating oil and gas platform to the natural coral formations of the Flower Gardens (WFGB) afforded us the opportunity to not only compare several platform configurations, but also to compare the fish communities at "artificial reefs" to that of a neighboring natural system. It was therefore the purpose of this study to compare the fish communities associated with an operating oil and gas platform, two artificial reef configurations, and the WFGB. Reef configurations included a production platform toppled in place as a deep water artificial reef (West Cameron 617A), a nearby partially removed platform (High Island A355), and an operating production platform (High Island A350). We sought to identify species composition at each site; to estimate the fish biomass/density associated with each site; to determine the effects of side, depth, and distance from each site on fish biomass. Comparisons were then made between these sites and to other sites that had been surveyed.

Book Synopsis Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries by : National Research Council

Download or read book Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries written by National Research Council. This book was released on 1988-02-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In developing countries, traditional fishermen are important food contributors, yet technological information and development assistance to third-world nations often focuses on agriculture and industrial fishing, without addressing the needs of independent, small-scale fishermen. This book explores technological considerations of small-scale, primitive fishing technologies, and describes innovative, relatively inexpensive methods and tools that have already been successfully applied in developing countries. It offers practical information about all aspects of small-scale fishing, including boat design and construction, fishing methods and gear, artificial reef construction and fish aggregating devices, techniques for coastal mariculture, and simple methods for processing and preserving fish once they are caught. Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries is illustrated throughout with photographs of the devices and construction methods described in the text.
