Book Synopsis Tectonic Inheritance in Continental Rifts and Passive Margins by : Achyuta Ayan Misra

Download or read book Tectonic Inheritance in Continental Rifts and Passive Margins written by Achyuta Ayan Misra. This book was released on 2015-06-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reviews the mechanism of rifting with a focus on pre-existing tectonic weaknesses in pre-rift and/or basement rocks, i.e., on tectonic inheritance. The passive margins that are studied in this book are the Norwegian Continental Shelf, the Eastern North America and the East and West Indian Continental Margins. The continental rifts that have been analysed are the East African Rift System, the Brazilian Continental Rift Systems and the European Cenozoic Rift System. It states how rifts and passive margins serve as valuable locations for hydrocarbon exploration. Tectonic inheritance/heritage examines the influence of pre-existing/pre-rift elements on the geometry, genesis and propagation of rift-related faults. Such elements include anisotropies in the shallow crustal levels, as well as the rheology of the lithosphere. Inheritance greatly influences the architecture of rifted passive margins including the attitude of faults and geometry of horsts, (half-) grabens, transfer zones etc. Inheritance is also a determining factor in the width of rifts and rift shoulder topography.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Marine Geosciences by : Jan Harff

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Marine Geosciences written by Jan Harff. This book was released on 2021-01-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally growing demand of energy and mineral resources, reliable future projection of climate processes and the protection of coasts to mitigate the threats of disasters and hazards require a comprehensive understanding of the structure, ongoing processes and genesis of the marine geosphere. Beyond the “classical” research fields in marine geology in current time more general concepts have been evolved integrating marine geophysics, hydrography, marine biology, climatology and ecology. As an umbrella the term “marine geosciences” has been broadly accepted for this new complex field of research and the solutions of practical tasks in the marine realm. The “Encyclopedia of Marine Geosciences” comprises the current knowledge in marine geosciences whereby not only basic but also applied and technical sciences are covered. Through this concept a broad scale of users in the field of marine sciences and techniques is addressed from students and scholars in academia to engineers and decision makers in industry and politics.

Book Synopsis Rifts and Passive Margins by : Michal Nemčok

Download or read book Rifts and Passive Margins written by Michal Nemčok. This book was released on 2016-03-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rifts and passive margins are extremely important for the petroleum industry, as they are areas of high sedimentation and can contain significant oil and gas resources. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of rifts and passive margins as a whole. It synthesises in one volume the existing information devoted to specific aspects of these vitally important hydrocarbon habitats. This collection of state-of-the-art information on the topic facilitates the better use of this knowledge to assess the risks of exploring and operating in these settings and the development of systematic and predictive hydrocarbon screening tools. The book will be invaluable for a broad range of readers, from advanced geology students and researchers to exploration geoscientists to exploration managers exploring for and developing hydrocarbon resources in analogous settings.

Book Synopsis The Western Alps, from Rift to Passive Margin to Orogenic Belt by : Pierre-Charles de Graciansky

Download or read book The Western Alps, from Rift to Passive Margin to Orogenic Belt written by Pierre-Charles de Graciansky. This book was released on 2010-10-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western Alps, from Rift to Passive Margin to Orogenic Belt addresses the evolution of the Alpine fold belt for the first time in the English language. It builds on classical Alpine geological studies made since the start of the 19th century by combining that research with modern results obtained over the past 50 years using new marine geological and geophysical technologies. The book thus provides an integrated overview of the evolution of the Alps from rift to passive margin to the present fold belt over a significant time span. An integrated multidisciplinary synthesis of the evolution of the Alps from rift to passive margin to foldbelt 175 figures, structural maps and cross sections An index of localities referred to in the fext and figures A brief summary of the history and development of ideas concerning the evolution of fold belts and passive margins since the 19th century Provides basis for further enquire and research Provides wider context relevant to marine and oil industry geoscientists
