Book Synopsis Resisting Racism and Promoting Equity Through Community-Engaged Social Action by : Luis Mirón

Download or read book Resisting Racism and Promoting Equity Through Community-Engaged Social Action written by Luis Mirón. This book was released on 2022-10-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges pre-service and in-service educators to reflect critically on their assumptions and engage in praxis promoting racial and social equity. Grounded in policy contexts, historical understandings, and critical theories, this book describes innovative community-engaged approaches to resisting racism and promoting equity and features reflections and personal narratives from partners in change—including on-the-ground activists, voices from younger and older generations, educators, and first-time writers. Fueled by the ideology of white supremacy for over four centuries that whites matter more than Blacks, the authors argue that racial inequities exacerbated during the Trump administration and the legacy of neo-liberal policies dating to the "New Federalism" fiercely necessitate invoking community-engaged strategies to advance equity. This book advocates for collaboration among schools, community organizations, businesses, university centers, and community activists to address historically pressing issues, including systemic racism, declining educational opportunities, limited access to ongoing health care, and the decline of civility in public life.

Book Synopsis Anti-Racist Community Engagement by : Christina Santana

Download or read book Anti-Racist Community Engagement written by Christina Santana. This book was released on 2023-12-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anti-racist Community Engagement: Principles and Practices centers anti-racist community-engaged traditions that BIPOC academics and community members have created through more than a century of collaboration across university and community. It demonstrates both the progress and the work that still needs to be done. The book is organized around a set of Anti-racist Community Engagement Principles developed by the editors as part of their shared work and dialogue with colleagues regionally and across the country. The significant number of diverse voices that have informed the creation of the principles reveal the groundswell of work underway to center anti-racist values and to pivot away from the traditional, higher education-centric, and “white savior” ways of doing community engagement teaching, research, and practice. The chapters in this book are organized into four sections, each focused on one of the four Anti-racist Community Engagement Principles. The first section explores the various ways in which reframing our institutional and pedagogical practices can help counteract the persistence and impact of racism on our campuses and in our community engagement work. In the second section, authors share practices that promote critical reflection on individual and systemic/structural racism through examinations of positionality, bias, and historical roots of systemic racism. The third section examines intentional learning and course design through anti-racist learning goals, course content, policies, and assessment. Finally, the fourth section shows how authors have developed compassionate and reflective classrooms by creating a sense of belonging that acknowledges student cultural assets and contributions and meets students where they are to co-create a supportive anti-racist learning environment. Each chapter in the book introduces a specific example of anti-racist community engagement, with authors providing unique, situated insights into the nature and complexity of the factors at play. This is followed by a “Practice” section where authors reflect on their engagement, and the lessons learned through it, thus leaving readers with detailed insights and roadmaps for adapting or replicating the work. Finally, a “Connections” section places the case and its practices into broader contexts of pedagogical, curricular, institutional, and community change. There is an open access digital companion to the volume, where authors have shared materials that will help shed further light on their compelling practices, including syllabi, agendas, handouts, worksheets, and additional resources.

Book Synopsis Poetic Inquiry and Arts-Based Research for the Maintenance of the Republic and What Comes After by : Angelo J. Letizia

Download or read book Poetic Inquiry and Arts-Based Research for the Maintenance of the Republic and What Comes After written by Angelo J. Letizia. This book was released on 2023-12-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the power of poetry and the ways in which academics can utilize poetry to go beyond the scholarly realm and create works of art which, unlike traditional academic works, problematize and question reality rather than simply describe it. Through its disciplinary, scholarly, and personal construction, poetry holds the potential to “erase” what we know and build a new world. The purpose of this book is to show how professors and students who write poetry can be emboldened to imagine new forms of government and political arrangements, promote social change and challenges to power structures, and detail radical ways of living with each other more generally. Conceiving of the “republic” as a democratic republic, or representative democracy, the author calls attention to the idea of poetry as evidence-based, which, despite the absence of verifiable data, nonetheless gives structure to ideas and experiences filtered through human cognition, imagination, and senses. Grounded in theory, arts-based research, and poetic inquiry and supplemented with practical class assignments, pedagogical strategies, and reflective items, this volume will appeal to faculty, scholars, and postgraduate students working across research methods, arts-based research and practice, and language and linguistics.
