Book Synopsis Research in Mathematics and Public Policy by : Mary Lee

Download or read book Research in Mathematics and Public Policy written by Mary Lee. This book was released on 2020-12-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features a variety of research projects at the intersection of mathematics and public policy. The topics included here fall in the areas of cybersecurity and climate change, two broad and impactful issues that benefit greatly from mathematical techniques. Each chapter in the book is a mathematical look into a specific research question related to one of these issues, an approach that offers the reader insight into the application of mathematics to important public policy questions. The articles in this volume are papers inspired by a Workshop for Women in Mathematics and Public Policy, held January 22-25, 2019 at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics and the Luskin Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. The workshop was created to promote and develop women at all levels of their careers as researchers in mathematics and public policy. The idea was modeled after other successful Research Collaboration Conferences for Women, where junior and senior women come together at week-long conferences held at mathematics institutes to work on pre-defined research projects. The workshop focused on how mathematics can be used in public policy research and was designed to foster collaborative networks for women to help address the gender gap in mathematics and science.

Book Synopsis A Mathematics Course for Political and Social Research by : Will H. Moore

Download or read book A Mathematics Course for Political and Social Research written by Will H. Moore. This book was released on 2013-08-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political science and sociology increasingly rely on mathematical modeling and sophisticated data analysis, and many graduate programs in these fields now require students to take a "math camp" or a semester-long or yearlong course to acquire the necessary skills. Available textbooks are written for mathematics or economics majors, and fail to convey to students of political science and sociology the reasons for learning often-abstract mathematical concepts. A Mathematics Course for Political and Social Research fills this gap, providing both a primer for math novices in the social sciences and a handy reference for seasoned researchers. The book begins with the fundamental building blocks of mathematics and basic algebra, then goes on to cover essential subjects such as calculus in one and more than one variable, including optimization, constrained optimization, and implicit functions; linear algebra, including Markov chains and eigenvectors; and probability. It describes the intermediate steps most other textbooks leave out, features numerous exercises throughout, and grounds all concepts by illustrating their use and importance in political science and sociology. Uniquely designed and ideal for students and researchers in political science and sociology Uses practical examples from political science and sociology Features "Why Do I Care?" sections that explain why concepts are useful Includes numerous exercises Complete online solutions manual (available only to professors, email david.siegel at duke.edu, subject line "Solution Set") Selected solutions available online to students

Book Synopsis Directions For Mathematics Research Experience For Undergraduates by : Yanir A Rubinstein

Download or read book Directions For Mathematics Research Experience For Undergraduates written by Yanir A Rubinstein. This book was released on 2015-09-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The collection transcends the traditional institutional division lines (private, public, large, small, research, undergraduate, etc.) and has something to offer for readers in every realm of academia. The collection challenges the reader to think about how to implement and improve undergraduate research experiences, what such experiences mean to students and faculty, and how such experiences can take a permanent place in the modern preparation of undergraduate mathematics and STEM majors. The book is an open invitation to learn about what has worked and what hasn’t in the inspiration, and has the potential to ignite initiatives with long-lasting benefits to students and faculty nationwide.' See Full ReviewNotices of the AMS“The US National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in mathematics is now 25 years old, and it is a good time to think about what it has achieved, how it has changed, and where this idea will go next.”This was the premise of the conference held at Mt. Holyoke College during 21-22 June, 2013, and this circle of ideas is brought forward in this volume. The conference brought together diverse points of view, from NSF administrators, leaders of university-wide honors programs, to faculty who had led REUs, recent PhDs who are expected to lead them soon, and students currently in an REU themselves. The conversation was so varied that it justifies a book-length attempt to capture all that was suggested, reported, and said. Among the contributors are Ravi Vakil (Stanford), Haynes Miller (MIT), and Carlos Castillo-Chavez (Arizona, President's Obama Committee on the National Medal of Science 2010-2012).This book should serve not only as a collection of speakers' notes, but also as a source book for anyone interested in teaching mathematics and in the possibility of incorporating research-like experiences in mathematics classes at any level, as well as designing research experiences for undergraduates outside of the classroom.

Book Synopsis Public Policy Making Reexamined by : Yehezkel Dror

Download or read book Public Policy Making Reexamined written by Yehezkel Dror. This book was released on 2017-09-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Policymaking Reexamined is now recognized as a fundamental treatise for public policy studies. Although it caused much controversy when it was first published for its systematic approach to policy studies, the book is acknowledged as a modern classic of continuing importance for the teaching and research of public policy, planning and policy analysis, and public administration. The paperback includes a new introduction updating and supplementing many of the author's original ideas.Professor Dror combines the approaches of policy analysis, behavioral science, and systems analysis in his examination of the reality of public policymaking and his suggestions for its reform. Actual policymaking is carefully evaluated with the help of explicit criteria and standards based on an optimal model approach, resulting in detailed proposals for improvement. He applies a scientific orientation to the study of social facts and theory.
