The Battery was then a large, Open park, containing many fine shade-trees, and fronted by handsome dwellings on State street and Market field street, affording a delightful place for a promenade of a warm day or evening, not the least pleasant feature of which was the sniff of old ocean in the breeze from the harbor in front, the islands in the bay and the far-off hills of Staten Island and New Jersey furnishing the picturesque.
