Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remains, Historical and Literary, Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 43 History of the English people. In this respect it is believed to be without parallel. N 0 other known accounts, of that or any earlier period, have so wide a range, a continuity so little broken, or so long a duration. The history of prices in England anterior to the seventeenth century, has yet to be written, and probably there is no publication extant containing so ample a store of material for such a history, as the volume now before the reader. It is, indeed, emphatically a Book of Prices of farm and other rural labour, domestic service in various grades, the wages or payments of handicraftsmen and artizans, the cost of every article used as food, apparel, furniture, or for any purpose of life. It records the prices of all kinds of live stock, cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, poultry, &c.; of butcher's meat, wild-fowl, game, and fish, whether of the stream or the sea, fresh and cured. Spices and groceries, chandlery and fuel, earthen and treen ware, glass and cutlery, bedding and furniture, in short, everything needed for a household has here its name and cost recorded. It throws great light on the prices of textile fabrics, whether of woollen or linen, cotton or silk, from the coarsest canvas and baize to the finest lace, satin and taffeta. Blankets, sheets, towelling, and every variety of stuff for wear and use, will be found named. In attire, nothing is wanting, from hat and Wig to the very shoe ties. Doublet and jerkin, cloak and gown, hose and nether-stocks, boots, shoes, and slippers, are here specified, with the exact sums paid for materials and for making, even to the needles and thread, the inkle, tags. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remains Historical and Literary, Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 114 The notes to the second volume edited by Mr. Crossley, though not of less interest, are fewer in number, particularly in the latter part; and as from the time it was issued in 1855, Mr. Crossley seems to have entirely laid the work aside, it may not unfairly be assumed that like many other editors before and since, he had become weary of the task he had undertaken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remains, Historical and Literary, Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 25 Stanley complained he had outlived his friends, and in the year 1624 he was constrained to go to Spain, in his old age, having now seen ninety-five years. This is not very precise as to the year when he had seen this ex treme age, and, unluckily, the account of the funeral wants the date of the year. In Tong's Visitation, 1532 3, Rowland Stanley has entered himself as unmarried, and we therefore place Stanley's birth in 1534, and take the now of Wadsworth to mean 1629, the date Of his book.
