Book Synopsis Recent advances in crop protection by : P.Parvatha Reddy

Download or read book Recent advances in crop protection written by P.Parvatha Reddy. This book was released on 2012-09-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent years, the need to increase food production to meet the demands of rapidly increasing population from a limited land resource necessitated the use of intensive farming systems, with the inputs like narrow genetic base, high dose of fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation, monocropping, etc. which led to the development of diseases and pest. The effect of changing global climate, particularly the sharp increase in CO2 concentration, has increased the susceptibility of plants to pathogens and pests. Because of the chemicalization of agriculture, the age-old eco-friendly pest management practices like sanitation, crop rotation, mixed cropping, adjustment of date of planting, fallowing, summer ploughing, green manuring, composting, etc. are not being practiced, affecting the crops adversely. This has encouraged researchers to look for eco-friendly and novel approaches for pest management. The information on recent advances in crop protection (involving bacteria, fungi, nematodes, insects, mites and weeds) is scattered. The book delves upon the most latest developments in crop protection such as avermectins, bacteriophages, biofumigation, biotechnological approaches; bio-priming of seeds; disguising the leaf surface; use of non-pathogenic strains, plant defense activators, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, pathogenesis-related proteins, strobilurin fungicides, RNA interference, and variety of mixtures/cultivar mixtures/multilines; soil solarization; biointensive integrated pest management; among several others (fusion protein-based biopesticides, seed mat technology and environmental methods). This book is a ready reference for students, policy-makers, scientists, researchers and extension workers.

Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Stored Product Protection by : Christos G. Athanassiou

Download or read book Recent Advances in Stored Product Protection written by Christos G. Athanassiou. This book was released on 2018-06-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to assess, evaluate and critically analyze the methods that are currently available for a judicious pest management in durable food. It presents and analyzes a vast amount of methods that are already in use in “real world” industrial applications. After the phase-out of methyl bromide, but also the withdrawal of several insecticides and the continuously updated food safety regulations, there is a significant knowledge gap on the use of risk-reduced, ecologically-compatible control methods that can be used with success against stored-product insect species and related arthropods. The importance of integrated pest management (IPM) is growing, but the concept as practiced for stored products might differ from IPM as historically developed for field crops. This book discusses a wide variety of control strategies used for stored product management and describes some of the IPM components. The editors included chemical and non-chemical methods, as both are essential in IPM. They set the scene for more information regarding emerging issues in stored product protection, such as emerging, alien and invasive species as threats for global food security, as well as the importance of stored-product arthropods for human health. Finally, the analysis of the economics of stored product protection is presented, from theory to practice.

Book Synopsis Crop Protection: Advances in Agricultural Science by : Harley Wells

Download or read book Crop Protection: Advances in Agricultural Science written by Harley Wells. This book was released on 2021-12-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop protection is the practice of managing pests, weeds and diseases that affect agricultural crops. It is generally achieved by the implementation of pesticide-based approaches, barrier-based approaches, biological pest control methods, animal-psychology based approaches and methods of biotechnology. Ploughing and cultivating the soil prior to sowing potentially reduces the risk of pests. Pesticide-based approaches include the use of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. Biological pest control is a method of pest management that encourages herbivory, predation, parasitism, or other natural mechanisms. Diseases in crops are generally prevented by using pathogen-free seeds, controlling field moisture, or implementing approaches like crop rotation. This book provides comprehensive insights into the latest advances in agricultural science. Most of the topics introduced herein cover new techniques of crop protection. For someone with an interest and eye for detail, this book covers the most significant topics in this domain.
