Book Synopsis Realist Constructivism by : J. Samuel Barkin

Download or read book Realist Constructivism written by J. Samuel Barkin. This book was released on 2010-03-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realism and constructivism, two key contemporary theoretical approaches to the study of international relations, are commonly taught as mutually exclusive ways of understanding the subject. Realist Constructivism explores the common ground between the two, and demonstrates that, rather than being in simple opposition, they have areas of both tension and overlap. There is indeed space to engage in a realist constructivism. But at the same time, there are important distinctions between them, and there remains a need for a constructivism that is not realist, and a realism that is not constructivist. Samuel Barkin argues more broadly for a different way of thinking about theories of international relations, that focuses on the corresponding elements within various approaches rather than on a small set of mutually exclusive paradigms. Realist Constructivism provides an interesting new way for scholars and students to think about international relations theory.

Book Synopsis Power, Realism and Constructivism by : Stefano Guzzini

Download or read book Power, Realism and Constructivism written by Stefano Guzzini. This book was released on 2013-03-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Framed by a new and substantial introductory chapter, this book collects Stefano Guzzini’s reference articles and some less well-known publications on power, realism and constructivism. By analysing theories and their assumptions, but also theorists following their intellectual paths, his analysis explores the diversity of different schools, and moves beyond simple definitions to explore their intrinsic tensions and fallacies. Guzzini’s approach to the analysis of power – within and outside International Relations – provides the common theme of the book through which the theoretical state of the art in IR is reassessed. A novel analysis of power and the potential limits of realism and constructivism in International Relations, Power, Realism and Constructivism will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations, international political economy, social and political theory, and the study of power.

Book Synopsis The Social Construction of State Power by : Barkin, J. Samuel

Download or read book The Social Construction of State Power written by Barkin, J. Samuel. This book was released on 2020-05-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realism and constructivism are often viewed as competing paradigms for understanding international relations, though scholars are increasingly arguing that the two are compatible. Edited by one of the leading proponents of realist constructivism, this volume shows what realist constructivism looks like in practice by innovatively combining exposition and critiques of the realist constructivist approach with a series of international case studies. Each chapter addresses a key empirical question in international relations and provides important guidance for how to combine both approaches effectively in research. Addressing future directions and possibilities for realist constructivism in international relations, this book makes a significant contribution to the theorizing of global politics.

Book Synopsis Creating Insecurity by : Anthony D. Lott

Download or read book Creating Insecurity written by Anthony D. Lott. This book was released on 2019-10-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this absorbing book Anthony Lott develops a national security analysis that can be used to critique the policies of states. His approach combines realist thought common to traditional security studies and a version of 'political' constructivism common to critical security studies. While the focus on human security remains integral, the 9/11 attacks on New York demonstrate the importance of national security traditionally defined. This book recognizes the importance of both components of security in a broader security dialogue. After building a theoretical understanding of security, the work examines four disparate security issues that currently engage policy makers in the United States: the current discourse concerning ballistic missile defense, the war on drugs in Colombia, democratic challenges to economic globalization and the state response, and the US-led war to oust Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq. The book is designed for upper-division international relations courses in national security studies, international politics and theory.
