Book Synopsis Railway Construction (Classic Reprint) by : William Hemingway Mills

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Construction The construction and maintenance of a railway calls for the application of so many branches of engineering that several volumes would be required to do ample justice to a subject so comprehensive and ever-extending. To avoid attempting so wide a range, the object of the following pages has been to describe briefly some of the recognized leading features which regulate railway construction, and to assist the explanation with sketches of works selected from actual practice. Where the number of existing good examples is legion, it is somewhat difficult to make a choice for illustration, and the course adopted has been to select such samples of structures as appear best to elucidate in a simple manner the different types of work under consideration. In the drawings and diagrams many important minor details are necessarily omitted, partly to avoid complexity, but principally to leave more prominent the leading features of the particular piece of work referred to in the description. Some of the sketches of the large span bridges and large span roofs are only shown in outline; but, as their principal dimensions are given, a general idea can be obtained of their actual proportions. No allusion is made to the requisite strengths of the various structures described, nor to the necessary dimensions of the materials used in their construction, as this would necessitate the introduction of a vast amount of mathematical formulae which does not come under the province of the object in view, and which the engineer has already at command from his training and works of reference. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light Railway Construction This work is intended as a book of reference for the use of engineers in practice and their pupils and assistants. The Author, having himself experienced the want of a practical office manual, has endeavoured to provide a text-book which, though primarily intended for those engaged in constructing light railways, may be more or less helpful to all who are employed on public works, whatever may be their nature. Book Synopsis Railroad Construction (Classic Reprint) by : Charles Lee Crandall

Download or read book Railroad Construction (Classic Reprint) written by Charles Lee Crandall. This book was released on 2017-11-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad Construction This book had its beginning in some notes on railroad con struction which were first prepared about twenty-five years ago and were issued in mimeograph form for the use of students in the College of Civil Engineering at Cornell University. These notes have required frequent revision in order to keep them abreast of ever changing practice, but so much has been done in the last few years in the direction of standardizing construction that the time now seems opportune for enlarging them into a book, for general use. The discussions in engineering associations and in the technical papers have done much to stimulate interest and develop effort. They have also tended to standardize practice by suggesting to each engineer the adoption of the good features of the standards of other railroads, which were improvements upon and applicable to his own road. The method adopted by the American Railway Engineering Association of assigning topics to committees for investigation and report, the report to be presented at the annual convention for general discussion, has accomplished much in this direction. In this work an attempt has been made to present to the reader glimpses of the field and to impress upon him something of the spirit of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Construction, Vol. 1: From the Setting Out of the Centre Line to the Completion of the Works Tan title of this work will, I trust, sufficiently explain the object I have had in writing the following pages. They are the result, as regards both field and office work, of various notes, observations, and rules made and applied during a practice of many years in carrying out railway works.
