Book excerpt: And starting from there, it can induce an explicit understanding of certain fundamental features of the new scientific thinking. A formalized epistemology should not be mistaken for a crossdisciplinary or a multidisciplinary project. The latter projects are designed to offer to nonspecialists access to information, to results obtained inside specialized disciplines, as well as a certain understanding of these results; whereas a formalized epistemology should equip anyone with a framework for conceptualizing himself in whatever domain and direction he or she might choose. A formalized epistemology should not be mistaken either for an approach belonging to the modern cognitive sciences

Book Synopsis Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision by : Jerome R. Busemeyer

Download or read book Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision written by Jerome R. Busemeyer. This book was released on 2012-07-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of our understanding of human thinking is based on probabilistic models. This innovative book by Jerome R. Busemeyer and Peter D. Bruza argues that, actually, the underlying mathematical structures from quantum theory provide a much better account of human thinking than traditional models. They introduce the foundations for modeling probabilistic-dynamic systems using two aspects of quantum theory. The first, 'contextuality', is a way to understand interference effects found with inferences and decisions under conditions of uncertainty. The second, 'quantum entanglement', allows cognitive phenomena to be modeled in non-reductionist ways. Employing these principles drawn from quantum theory allows us to view human cognition and decision in a totally new light. Introducing the basic principles in an easy-to-follow way, this book does not assume a physics background or a quantum brain and comes complete with a tutorial and fully worked-out applications in important areas of cognition and decision.

Book Synopsis Decision Making and Modelling in Cognitive Science by : Sisir Roy

Download or read book Decision Making and Modelling in Cognitive Science written by Sisir Roy. This book was released on 2016-10-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the paradigm of quantum ontology as an appropriate model for measuring cognitive processes. It clearly shows the inadequacy of the application of classical probability theory in modelling the human cognitive domain. The chapters investigate the context dependence and neuronal basis of cognition in a coherent manner. According to this framework, epistemological issues related to decision making and state of mind are seen to be similar to issues related to equanimity and neutral mind, as discussed in Buddhist perspective. The author states that quantum ontology as a modelling tool will help scientists create new methodologies of modelling in other streams of science as well.

Book Synopsis New Physics by : Claus Birkholz

Download or read book New Physics written by Claus Birkholz. This book was released on 2013-12-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Standard Models" out of date and inconsistent, and string/brane models still "beyond" them - long since they reached their ends. A New Physics must come. Marrying Planck's quantum theory with Einstein's General Relativity, the author is presenting a consistent Quantum Gravity. Its extension to a "Grand Unification" of all forces of nature emerges as a quantum field theory in a fully quantized, "background-independent", bent space-time. Dark Energy, Dark Matter, hadron and lepton flavours, the details of Einstein's cosmological constant, and much more is dropping out by the way. The quark confinement, the physics before the Big Bang, and a lot of old problems of fundamental physics are dissolving to nothing, explaining themselves as self-evident properties of nature. Future starts to-day. Come along on the journey! Main target groups: Students, physicists, mathematicians, but also people interested in philosophy or with an inclination to leave the beaten dead-end tracks of actual fundamental theories of the old style in favour of more promising, novel ways out.
