Book Synopsis The Impact of Physical Education on Students' Performance Outcomes in Mathematics by : Ryan T. Cox

Download or read book The Impact of Physical Education on Students' Performance Outcomes in Mathematics written by Ryan T. Cox. This book was released on 2022. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research studies have suggested that students who participate in daily physical activity and who are more physically fit may have improved academic achievement scores. However, pressures on school districts to improve students' academic achievement in core course areas such as math, science, and English have put less emphasis on courses such as physical education. School districts around the country have eliminated and/or have lessened the amount of physical activity students receive during the school day. This study examined the impact of time of physical education and difference in 9th-grade students' math achievement scores in their Algebra course and outcomes on the June 2019 New York State Algebra I Regents Examination. The causal-comparative quantitative study analyzed the mean scores between students who took physical education before or after receiving math instruction in their Algebra course. Further, the interaction effect of students' gender and economic status based on time of physical education was also investigated. The results of the study found that students who participate in physical education before they received instruction in Algebra had statistically significantly higher mean scores in both the course and end of year-standardized test than those students who participated in physical education after receiving math instruction. There were also findings that suggest that gender and economic status are variables in academic achievement based on the time of physical education. This research study provides implications that administrators may consider when structuring the schedule in their districts and ultimately aligning physical education and or physical activity prior to instruction targeted for improvement.

Book excerpt: Psychology has an important part to play in the teaching and practice of physical education and sport, and this volume, originally published in 1972, provided a systematic and authoritative introduction to the major areas in this field at the time. The contributors, leading experts in the UK and US, cover five major areas of psychology: perception, learning, personality, motivation and emotion, focusing attention on important current research of the time, and opening up these areas for the serious student. They review controversial issues of central importance in physical education and sport, pointing to practical implications for learning, teaching and coaching. A great opportunity to read an early take on what has become a central part of physical education and sport today.

Book Synopsis Evaluating Performance in Physical Education by : B. Don Franks

Download or read book Evaluating Performance in Physical Education written by B. Don Franks. This book was released on 2013-10-22. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluating Performance in Physical Education describes the tools and techniques that can be used by teachers to assess student performance, curriculum, and method of teaching. The book discusses conventional material in evaluating physical education performance through written, fitness tests, and elementary statistics. The text also explains nonparametric statistics, subjective evaluation, and a theoretical model for fitness and performance. The authors review the functions, evaluation, and administration of testing. The authors also explain in more detail subjective evaluation and offer three forms: 1) experience of the teacher; 2) skill to be rated; and 3) length of time for rating. In testing events, nonparametric statistical procedures show more reliability; parametric procedures are preferably to be used in established research stations. The authors also list some guidelines to be followed in evaluating the student such as objectives, assignment of grades, and acceptance of the grading plan. The book also discusses procedures when evaluation involves large groups. The text can assist physical education teachers, school administrators, and educators in evaluating their subject course or curricula.
