Book excerpt: On a sunny Saturday morning at Chicago's Simeon Career Academy back in 2010 at a Concerned Christian Men (CCM) Breakfast I was engaged in a stimulating personal conversation with the late Dr. William Lackland. His insights rocked my world. That conversation eventually inspired me to write a book. This book! Dr. Lackland shared some of his university experiences with me. The dean advised him to enroll into several remedial courses including reading and math. The deans attitude conveyed his doubts about Williams ability to pass these courses, much less completing the university curriculum. Dr. Lackland refused to let this stranger deter him from earning his Ph.D., in Chemistry, no less. Listening to Dr. Lacklands story whet my appetite for other successful African-American mens stories. I had a strong suspicion that African-American men though different in many ways, are very much alike. Most Black men continue to be confronted by seemingly overwhelming odds, but WE persist. This realization motivated me to use our experiences with success to create a directory of African American men. I shared my directory idea with friends and asked them for help. It was my vision to make it a team project. I got no takers. Thus, I changed the idea from a directory to a book. Over several months I researched and read the literature about successful Black boys and men. I then created an online survey to be completed by a few African American men I know. The survey delved into their childhood, family, employment, profession, and the like. More than fifty men of color were sent the survey by email to complete. Thirteen of them completed the survey. I have worked and learned from time to time with most of these men. Thus, I have had personal experiences with each of them. I wanted to use successful African American mens life experiences as a blueprint for Black boys and young men who are striving to become successful. I want them to realize that the men that they are reading about were once boys just like them.

Book Synopsis Black Profiles in Courage by : Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Download or read book Black Profiles in Courage written by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This book was released on 2000. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ideal introduction to black history, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar examines the lives of heroic African Americans and offers their stories as inspiring examples for young people, who too rarely encounter positive black role models in history books or in the media. Profiled here are Peter Salem, the volunteer soldier who turned the tide at Bunker Hill; Joseph Cinque, leader of a daring revolt on the slave ship Amistad; Frederick Douglass, self-taught writer-orator and escaped slave who forced President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation years ahead of schedule; Harriet Tubman, who led at least three hundred slaves to freedom; Lewis Latimer, whose scientific work was integral to the achievements of Bell and Edison; and many more. Shining a bright light on the touchstones of character, these exemplary stories reemphasize the integral role of African Americans in weaving the fabric of our nation and form an empowering legacy from which Americans of all ages can draw inspiration, wisdom, and pride.

Book Synopsis Successful African-American Men by : Sandra Taylor Griffin

Download or read book Successful African-American Men written by Sandra Taylor Griffin. This book was released on 2007-05-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics emphasize that one out of every five men is incarcerated. The background experiences of dysfunctional black men are often explored while few studies focus on the motivating triggers for high achieving black men. Successful African American Men: From Childhood to Adulthood is a unique study of the nurturing behavioral settings that high achieving black men used as adolescents and examines whether social capital played a role in helping them negotiate their way out of disadvantage. Equally important, is how these settings accommodated the men's diversity, complexity, and the influence of black culture, and reconciled it to their ability to respond and cope with mainstream America. This volume will be of interest to psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists and others interested in the rich diversity of experience found within communities of color.
