Book Synopsis Probabilistic Models for Order-picking Operations with Multiple In-the-aisle Pick Positions by : Jingming Liu

Download or read book Probabilistic Models for Order-picking Operations with Multiple In-the-aisle Pick Positions written by Jingming Liu. This book was released on 2019. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of probability density functions (pdfs) for travel time of a narrow aisle lift truck (NALT) and an automated storage and retrieval (AS/R) machine is the focus of the dissertation. The multiple in-the-aisle pick positions (MIAPP) order picking system can be modeled as an M/G/1 queueing problem in which storage and retrieval requests are the customers and the vehicle (NALT or AS/R machine) is the server. Service time is the sum of travel time and the deterministic time to pick up and deposit a pallet (TPD). Our first contribution is the development of travel time pdfs for retrieval operations in an MIAPP order picking system supported by a narrow aisle lift truck (MIAPP-NALT); storage operations are assumed to occur when order picking is not being performed. A rectilinear travel metric is used for the NALT; pdfs are derived and finite population queueing and infinite population queueing models are used to analyze the retrieval operations under stochastic conditions. Our second contribution is the development of travel time pdfs for retrieval operations in an MIAPP order picking system supported by an AS/R machine (MIAPP-AS/RS); storage operations are assumed to occur when order picking is not being performed. A Chebyshev travel metric is used for the AS/R machine. For the MIAPP-AS/RS operation, pick positions are located at floor level and on a mezzanine. The pdfs for four scenarios are derived and finite population and infinite population queueing models are used to analyze the retrieval operation under stochastic conditions. Our final contribution is the development of travel time pdfs for storage and retrieval operations in an MIAPP-NALT system with two classes of stock keeping units (skus): fast movers and slow movers. A rectilinear travel metric is used and two levels of pick positions are considered. Non-preemptive priority queueing and non-priority queueing models are used to analyze storage and retrieval requests in the MIAPP-NALT system. Retrieval requests are given a higher priority than storage requests; alternately, storage and retrieval requests are served using a first come, first serve (FCFS) discipline.

Book Synopsis Advances in Resilient and Sustainable Transport by : Uwe Clausen

Download or read book Advances in Resilient and Sustainable Transport written by Uwe Clausen. This book was released on 2023-03-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on recent research and developments at the interface between the areas of production, logistics and traffic. Gathering the proceedings of the 6th ICPLT, held on March 22-23, 2023, at TU Dortmund University, in Germany, this volume gives a special emphasis to theories, trends and technologies for planning and operating freight transport systems in a sustainable and resilient way. The twenty-two contributions included in this book cover algorithms, models, and experimental methods to addresses challenges and knowledge gaps relating to traffic flows and logistic processes. They also report on advanced technologies, human factors research and strategies that should help better understand the interdependencies and conflicts of interest in the field of production, logistics and traffic, and to develop feasible solutions. All in all, this book provides a timely snapshot of research and developments concerning freight and public transport, cargo bikes, maritime and rail transport, electrical and hydrogen vehicles, simulation and optimization in production and logistics, production and supply chain management, sustainable logistics, and intralogistics and automation. It offers extensive information to researchers, engineers and other professionals, and public authorities that are active in all the above- mentioned fields.

Book Synopsis Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain by : Riccardo Manzini

Download or read book Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain written by Riccardo Manzini. This book was released on 2012-01-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increased globalization and offshore sourcing, global supply chain management is becoming an important issue for many businesses as it involves a company's worldwide interests and suppliers rather than simply a local or national orientation. The storage systems significantly affect the level of quality of products, the customer’s service level, and the global logistic cost. The mission of warehousing systems design, control and optimization is to effectively ship products in the right place, at the right time, and in the right quantity (i.e. in any configuration) without any damages or alterations, and minimizing costs. Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain presents and discusses a set of models, tools and real applications, including a few case studies rarely presented with a sufficient detail by other literature, to illustrate the main challenges in warehousing activities. This includes all warehouse operations (from receiving to shipping), problems and issues (e.g. storage allocation, assignment, layout, vehicle routing) for industrial and service systems as parts of global supply chains. Advanced and effective solving methods are also illustrated and the discussed case studies help the reader to quickly apply the proposed models and techniques/algorithms. Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain is useful to managers and practitioners of industry and service sectors for the determination and modeling of the critical issues concerning warehousing systems planning and design. It is a valuable source of information for engineering students, doctoral and post-doctoral students, and researchers of academic institutions who are searching for advanced modeling approaches and solving techniques to complex logistic decision making problems.
