Book excerpt: Galaxy formation and evolution are driven by stars and star formation. Star formation is fundamental for shaping the universe as we see it today as part of the cosmic ecosystems encompassing galaxies, yet half of the physics that determines how much gas forms into stars – the stellar feedback (injection of energy and momentum to the surrounding material) half of the tug-of-war between gravity and stellar feedback – have only recently become a focus for observational astronomers. Theoretical explorations of stellar feedback have been extensive for the past four decades and our current understanding of star-forming galaxies comes primarily through extensive modeling and simulations with sub-grid physics prescriptions based on a handful of observations. In order to secure the basis for these sub-grid physics models and expand our understanding of star-formation and the effects of massive stars during all epochs of the universe, more observations of these processes are needed. Observations of star forming regions provide the foundation to anchor simulations and observations of analogues to high-redshift galaxies help determine the sources that reionized the universe and the role stars played in during the Epoch of Reionization. With multiwavelength observations of H ii regions in the Milky Way, I have probed the effects of stellar feedback in dynamics of H ii regions, providing the necessary basis for defining the sub-grid physics in simulations. Book excerpt: "The mechanism of stellar feedback--a star's injection of mass, energy, and momentum into the interstellar medium (ISM)--not only plays a key role in moderating star formation at the parsec scale, but is also thought to impact galactic mass and structure at the kiloparsec scale. Stellar feedback consists of a number of distinct processes, including supernova blasts and "early" pre-supernova phenomena such as radiative heating, photoionization, and stellar winds. However, due to the complexity of modeling a complete picture of stellar feedback, the interactions between the different forms of feedback are poorly understood. In particular, the effect of early feedback on the efficacy of later supernova feedback remains unclear. To address this problem, we seek to simulate and study a simplified model of stellar feedback consisting only of stellar winds and supernovae. For these simulations, we use TIGRESS, an extension of the Athena MHD code developed to study the ISM and star formation; on top of TIGRESS's nuanced treatment of supernova feedback, we implement a new algorithm for stellar wind feedback based on equations describing the evolution of "superbubbles," typical environments carved out of the ISM by correlated supernova blasts and stellar winds. Based on simple tests, our algorithm produces results in reasonably good agreement with physical predictions, therefore making our feedback module a reliable resource for the further study of star formation and star formation feedback."

Book excerpt: Massive stars play a crucial role in galactic chemical evolution, compact object formation, and stellar feedback. Computational models of massive stars and their explosions have progressed over the decades in concert with astrophysical observations to advance our theoretical understanding of stellar evolution and transient phenomena. Stellar models have been used to constrain supernova progenitor masses of observed explosions, estimate the age of globular clusters, and determine properties of the interior of the Sun. However, despite these advances, stellar models are subject to uncertainties that can qualitatively alter the outcome and often disagree with observation. Among the sources of uncertainties in stellar models are thermonuclear reaction rates, the treatment of mixing and heat transport via convection, and pre-supernova structure in core collapse supernova simulations. The consequences of these uncertainties directly impact theoretical models of massive stars and their explosions.In this Dissertation, I explore these areas of uncertainty and consider the implications they have on our theoretical understanding of massive stars and stellar transients. I begin by considering the impact of nuclear reaction rate uncertainties on the evolution of massive stars using 1D stellar evolution models. In this work, I sample 665 nuclear reaction rates according to their temperature-dependent uncertainties in a grid of 2000 stellar models to identify key reaction rates at five evolutionary epochs. Next, I present results of a 15 solar mass stellar model evolved in 2D and 3D for the final seven minutes prior to iron core collapse. In this work, I characterize the Si- and O-shell convective properties and compare them to predictions from 1D models. Following this, I present work considering 3D simulations of stellar Si- and O-shell convection in a 14-, 20-, and 25 solar mass model. These models are simulated for the final ten minutes prior to iron core collapse and represent the largest set of 3D pre-supernova models in the literature. Following this work, I consider the implications that models of 3D pre-supernova perturbations have on core-collapse supernova (CCSN) explosion properties. I present the results of 1-, 2-, and 3D neutrino-radiation-hydrodynamic CCSN simulations of a 15 solar mass using 2D/3D initial conditions. This work investigates the role that non-radial perturbations in the progenitor might have on multi-messenger signals produced in models of CCSNe. Lastly, I conclude with a brief discussion of MESA-Web: an online web interface to the stellar evolution toolkit, MESA. I discuss the current capabilities of this tool, the impact it has had over the past five years since its inception, and the future plans to continue to increase its utility as a scientific tool and resource for astronomy education. The data products as a result of this Dissertation are publicly available online.

Book excerpt: In 1965 Fritz Zwicky proposed a class of supernovae that he called "Type V", described as "excessively faint at maximum". There were only two members, SN1961v and Eta Carinae. We now know that Eta Carinae was not a true supernova, but if it were observed today in a distant galaxy we would call it a "supernova impostor". 170 years ago it experienced a "great eruption" lasting 20 years, expelling 10 solar masses or more, and survived. Eta Carinae is now acknowledged as the most massive, most luminous star in our region of the Galaxy, and it may be our only example of a very massive star in a pre-supernova state. In this book the editors and contributing authors review its remarkable history, physical state of the star and its ejecta, and its continuing instability.
