Book excerpt: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) accounts for a significant proportion of combat casualties as well as civilian trauma. Pharmaceutical interventions for brain trauma, in general, met with limited success and are often compounded by serious side effects. Recent research and technology on stem cell transplantation have opened up a novel means for ONS repair. This study aims to investigate the therapeutic potential of neural differentiation of stem cells from umbilical cord blood for neural repair following TBI. The present results have shown an in vitro differentiation of stem cells into neural lineages. These cells expressed neural markers nestin, Map2, GFAP and ONPase as detected by immunohistochemistry. Animals that received neural stem cells showed improved neurological functions when compared with control groups. This study has shown the differential and therapeutic potential of stem cells from umbilical cord blood which may be used as an alternative or a complementary therapy for traumatic brain injury.

Book Synopsis Cell Therapy for Brain Injury by : David C. Hess

Download or read book Cell Therapy for Brain Injury written by David C. Hess. This book was released on 2015-05-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell Therapy for Brain Injury is a thorough examination of using state-of-the-art cell therapy in the treatment of strokes and other traumatic brain injuries. This invaluable book covers this niche topic in depth from basic stem cell biology and principles of cell therapy through proposed mechanisms of action of cell therapy in stroke, pre-clinical data in stroke models, ongoing clinical trials, imaging and tracking of cells with MRI, neural stem cells in stroke and the "big pharma" perspective of cell therapy. Each chapter is written by well-known leaders in each field, thus providing a wealth of expertise. The breadth of this book makes it essential reading for neuroscientists, stem cell biologists, researchers or clinical trialists at pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies. It also serves as a thorough introduction for graduate students or post-doctoral fellows who hope to work in these fields.

Book Synopsis Progenitor Cell Therapy for Neurological Injury by : Charles S. Cox, Jr.

Download or read book Progenitor Cell Therapy for Neurological Injury written by Charles S. Cox, Jr.. This book was released on 2010-11-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are currently no reparative therapies for severe neurological injury, including brain injury, spinal cord injury and stroke. Actually, most treatments are designed simply to limit secondary damage. However, pre-clinical data supports the idea that exogenous stem and progenitor cells have the potential to promote a reparative response to severe neurological injuries. Progenitor Cell Therapy for Neurological Injury is a compilation of seminal essays that explore many unique aspects of neurological injury, focusing on the critical translational issues of cell delivery. Specifically, it discusses routes of administration, types of progenitor cells (alone and/or in combinations), timing of delivery and adjuncts to promote cell engraftment, survival and effectiveness. In addition, many chapters address measuring the effects of transplanted cells and cell tracking. The paradigms of how cell-based therapeutics affect neurological injury is changing rapidly. The developments in this field may ultimately offer realistic hope for improvement in patients with severe injuries. This book is a vital key toward unlocking those future treatments.
