Book excerpt: Post-tensioned concrete has proved to be an economically competitive and safe form of bridge construction enabling concrete to be used for bridges of significantly longer spans than was previously possible using untensioned reinforced concrete. While France has been foremost in pioneering the use of prestressed concrete for bridge construction, the UK has also made significant contributions through its research and innovation. This book reports the findings of a joint study group set up by the French and UK central government highway agencies to liaise on issues concerning post-tensioned concrete bridges and seek solutions for problems where they exist. Throughout the years, these bodies have accumulated a wealth of knowledge, most of which has been unpublished until now. This book makes available for the first time the valuable experiences of the authors, most of whom have been personally responsible for formulating and administering the relevant rules and regulations in their respective countries. Written in both English and French, this state-of-the-art report will be of use to the designers, constructors and managers of post-tensioned concrete bridges and the manufacturers of post-tensioning systems. It contains extensive historical and technical information with numerous references and bibliographies at the end of most chapters. The book considers the potential difficulties associated with construction and maintenance, and how these can be identified and combated. It concludes with a look at the future of post-tensioned concrete bridges, focusing on the further development of regulatory requirements.

Book Synopsis Durability of Post-tensioning Tendons by : fib Fédération internationale du béton

Download or read book Durability of Post-tensioning Tendons written by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2001-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some countries durability problems with post-tensioning tendons have in the past led to fairly restrictive regulations. Improvements to execution procedures have been developed since, and new or improved prestressing systems have been proposed, too. This development was, of course, subject of discussions in fib Commission 9 Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials and Sytems and in IABSE Working Commission 3 Concrete Structures. It was decided to organise a workshop with the aim to review the different aspects of the problems encountered and to discuss solutions available today. Keynote speakers from various countries were invited to contribute. Their papers are published in this bulletin, grouped together under the following themes: Inventory and condition (6 papers) Investigation and repair (5 papers) Technical progress (4 papers) Strategies for improvement (6 papers) Supported by the international federation for structural concrete fib, and the international association for bridge and structural engineering IABSE, the workshop took place on 15-16 November 2001 at Ghent University, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research, whose director also chaired the Scientific Committee and edited the bulletin. It needs to be emphasised that in the bulletin invited experts present their individual views. Although not yet discussed in any of the association's working bodies, the highly topical contents of the bulletin is believed to be of general interest to fib's members and to document a starting point for future work in this field. Therefore, the Council of fib agreed to exceptionally publish these papers within fib's series of Bulletins.

Book Synopsis Comprehensive Structural Integrity by : Ian Milne

Download or read book Comprehensive Structural Integrity written by Ian Milne. This book was released on 2003-07-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this major reference work is to provide a first point of entry to the literature for the researchers in any field relating to structural integrity in the form of a definitive research/reference tool which links the various sub-disciplines that comprise the whole of structural integrity. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between mechanics and materials and structural integrity applications. Because of the interdisciplinary and applied nature of the work, it will be of interest to mechanical engineers and materials scientists from both academic and industrial backgrounds including bioengineering, interface engineering and nanotechnology. The scope of this work encompasses, but is not restricted to: fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, materials, dynamics, environmental degradation, numerical methods, failure mechanisms and damage mechanics, interfacial fracture and nano-technology, structural analysis, surface behaviour and heart valves. The structures under consideration include: pressure vessels and piping, off-shore structures, gas installations and pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft, railways, bridges, plates and shells, electronic circuits, interfaces, nanotechnology, artificial organs, biomaterial prostheses, cast structures, mining... and more. Case studies will form an integral part of the work.
