Book excerpt: Polymeric Nanosystems: Theranostic Nanosystems, Volume One examines the applications of nanotherapeutic systems and nanodiagnostics in relation to polymeric nanosystems. In the last decade, numerous biopolymers have been utilized to prepare polymeric nanosystems for therapeutic applications. These biopolymers include polylactic acid, polylactide-co-glycolide, polycaprolactone, acrylic polymers, cellulose and cellulose derivatives, alginates, chitosan, gellan gum, gelatin, albumin, chontroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, guar gum, gum Arabic, gum tragacanth, xanthan gum, and starches. Besides these biopolymers, grafted polymers are also being used as advanced polymeric materials to prepare many theranostic nanocarriers and nanoformulations. This book explores the array of polymeric nanosystems to understand therapeutic potentials. It will be useful to pharmaceutical scientists, including industrial pharmacists and analytical scientists, health care professionals, and regulatory scientists actively involved in the pharmaceutical product and process development of tailor-made polysaccharides in drug delivery applications. - Contains in-depth discussions of the polymeric nanosystems including high-quality graphics, flowcharts, and graphs for enhanced understanding - Reviews the literature on polymeric nanosystems while also suggesting new avenues - Includes contributions in all areas of polymeric nanosystems, providing a thorough and interdisciplinary work

Book excerpt: Polymeric Nanomaterials in Nanotherapeutics describes how polymeric nanosensors and nanorobotics are used for biomedical instrumentation, surgery, diagnosis and targeted drug delivery for cancer, pharmacokinetics, monitoring of diabetes and healthcare. Key areas of coverage include drug administration and formulations for targeted delivery and release of active agents (drug molecules) to non-healthy tissues and cells. The book demonstrates how these are applied to dental work, wound healing, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, infectious diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases, metabolic diseases, and more. Methods of administration discussed include oral, dental, topical and transdermal, pulmonary and nasal, ocular, vaginal, and brain drug delivery and targeting. Drug delivery topics treated in several subchapters includes materials for active targeting and cases study of polymeric nanomaterials in clinical trials. The toxicity and regulatory status of therapeutic polymeric nanomaterials are also examined. The book gives a broad perspective on the topic for researchers, postgraduate students and professionals in the biomaterials, biotechnology, and biomedical fields. - Shows how the properties of polymeric nanomaterials can be used to create more efficient medical treatments/therapies - Demonstrates the potential and range of applications of polymeric nanomaterials in disease prevention, diagnosis, drug development, and for improving treatment outcomes - Accurately explains how nanotherapeutics can help in solving problems in the field through the latest technologies and formulations

Book excerpt: Polymeric and hybrid nanoparticles have received increased scientific interest in terms of basic research as well as commercial applications, promising a variety of uses for nanostructures in fields including bionanotechnology and medicine. Condensing the relevant research into a comprehensive reference, Polymer and Polymer-Hybrid Nanoparticles: From Synthesis to Biomedical Applications covers an array of topics from synthetic procedures and macromolecular design to possible biomedical applications of nanoparticles and materials based on original and unique polymers. The book presents a well-rounded picture of objects ranging from simple polymeric micelles to complex hybrid polymer-based nanostructures, detailing synthetic procedures, techniques for characterization and analysis, properties, and behavior in selective solvents and dispersions. Each chapter contains background and introductory information, summarizing generalities on the nanosystems being discussed. The chapters also describe representative works of experts and provide in-depth, focused discussions. The authors present current knowledge on the following topics: Designed synthesis of functional polymers Construction of block copolymer micellar and nonmicellar self-assembled structures Construction of organic–organic hybrid nanosized particles Construction of organic–inorganic hybrid nanoparticles and nanoassemblies The final chapter addresses biological applications of polymeric nanoparticles, including delivery of low-molecular-weight drugs, macromolecular drugs, imaging and diagnostics, and photodynamic therapy. Summarizing important developments in the field, the authors condense relevant research into a comprehensive resource.

Book Synopsis Polymeric Nanoparticles and Microspheres by : P. Guiot

Download or read book Polymeric Nanoparticles and Microspheres written by P. Guiot. This book was released on 2018-01-18. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributors were asked to emphasize their own experience with nanoparticles or microspheres. They were also encouraged to provide aspects normally not stipulated in specialized reviews. The objective was to produce a book which although written by specialists, presented a subject which could be easily understood by people in different fields of life sciences. Another goal was to set up a condensed work covering many aspects of nanoparticles and microspheres. That is the reason why, although mainly dealing with synthetic drug carriers, the first chapter is related to preparation and physicochemical properties of nanoparticles constructed from natural polymers. This is followed by two chapters involving the application of polymeric drug carriers in cancer therapy. The second chapter extensively describes in vitro and in vivo behaviour of purely synthetic nanoparticles. As ub the case of liposomes, a problem can be that some particles are preferentially taken up by the reticuloendothelial system. Magnetic drug carriers provide a partial answer to this problem since their tropism can be managed by an external magnet. The third chapter is entirely devoted to this aspect. A brief but original application of nanoparticles is given in the fourth chapter by reviewing their use in ocular therapy. Finally, two general applications of polymeric microspheres are discussed in chapters 5 and 6.
