Book excerpt: Multi-hop wireless networks have been extensively studied and are widely deployed for various networks. These networks include mobile Ad-hoc networks, sensor networks, mesh networks, space communication networks and delay-tolerance networks. In multi-hop wireless networks the end-to-end performance, in terms of throughput and delay, degrades exponentially with hop counts. Several factors contribute to this degradation including network topology, node distance, media access control protocol, application and the source and aggregate traffic characteristics. In this thesis we studied the impact of various factors that determine the performance of an end-to-end connection for various applications in multi-hop wireless networks. We have developed various simulation models to study the dynamics of the above mentioned factors for different media access control including IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.11e, IEEE 802.11s and TDMA under different traffic source conditions, such as constant bit rate, file transfer protocol and general traffic. Our study shows that multi-hop networks have significant limitations for delay-sensitive traffic and significant limitation in quality of service provisioning.

Book Synopsis Performance Analysis of Multihop Ad Hoc and Hybrid Wireless Networks by : Hrishikesh Venkataraman

Book excerpt: Multihop mobile wireless networks is a subject of intense research interest for next generation wireless systems. As we move towards fourth generation (4G) networks, high data-rates of the order of 100 Mbps can be achieved only over short distances. A multihop network has smaller transmission distance as compared to an equivalent single-hop network. This enables the radio terminals that are spatially well-separated from each other to reuse the same resources when the resulting interferences are not too severe. In this dissertation, the multihop network design is studied for two different kinds of systems: multihop ad hoc network and multihop hybrid cellular network. In the first part of the thesis work, a multihop ad hoc network is analyzed in detail and the system capacity is computed. However, the calculation of optimal resource allocation that would maximize the system capacity is found to be an NP-hard problem. Considering this complexity, a random data hopping technique has been proposed over a time-slot (TS) partitioned system in order to improve the system capacity of the network. It has been found that the granularity of the TS(s) can be increased by reducing the duration of each TS. Significantly, applying the random data hoping technique over the TS partitioned system results in an increase in the system capacity without any additional increase in the computational complexity. In the second part of the thesis work, a multihop hybrid cellular network is studied. It is known that optimal resource allocation in a multihop cellular network is again a NP-hard problem. A novel cluster-based design is proposed in this work for a 2-hop cellular network, whereby, two pairs communicate simultaneously in every hexagonal cell, at any time instant. Such a cluster-based 2-hop design provides an increase in the spatial resource reuse and hence results in a much higher system capacity as compared to three standard benchmark algorithms for 2-hop cellular networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapidly increasing penetration of laptop computers and mobile phones, which are primarily used by mobile users to access Internet s- vices like e-mail and World Wide Web (WWW) access, support of Internet services in a mobile environment is an emerging requirement. Wireless n- works have been used for communication among fully distributed users in a multimedia environment that has the needs to provide real-time bursty traffic (such as voice or video) and data traffic with excellent reliability and service quality. To satisfy the huge wireless multimedia service demand and improve the system performance, efficient channel access methods and analytical methods must be provided. In this way very accurate models, that faithfully reproduce the stochastic behavior of multimedia wireless communication and computer networks, can be constructed. Most of these system models are discrete-time queueing systems. Queueing networks and Markov chains are commonly used for the p- formance and reliability evaluation of computer, communication, and m- ufacturing systems. Although there are quite a few books on the individual topics of queueing networks and Markov chains, we have found none that covers the topics of discrete-time and continuous-time multichannel mul- traffic queueing networks. On the other hand, the design and development of multichannel mul- hop network systems and interconnected network systems or integrated n- works of multimedia traffic require not only such average performance m- sures as the throughput or packet delay but also higher moments of traffic departures and transmission delay.
