Book Synopsis Orthodox Theology in the Twenty-first Century by : Kallistos (Bishop of Diokleia)

Download or read book Orthodox Theology in the Twenty-first Century written by Kallistos (Bishop of Diokleia). This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this inaugural volume of the Doxa & Praxis series, esteemed theologian Metropolitan Kallistos Ware examines the future questions and concerns that await Orthodox Christianity and its theological reflection. Long-renowned for the depth of his theological, historical, and ecclesial work, Metropolitan Kallistos Ware maintains that recent Orthodox preoccupation with the church will give way to theological engagement with what it means to be human. In that anthropological endeavor, he argues that Christian theology has steep challenges to meet - but also crucial insights to offer - for illuminating the human condition. [In light of the current challenges faced by global Christianity, the Doxa & Praxis series - a collaborative effort of the Volos Academy and World Council of Churches Publications - invites creative and original reflection that reappraises, reappropriates, and further develops the riches of Orthodox thought for a deep renewal of Orthodox Christianity and for the benefit of the whole oikoumene.] (Series: Doxa & Praxis)

Download or read book Contextual Theology for the Twenty-First Century written by Stephen B. Bevans. This book was released on 2011-10-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars from the United States, Latin America, and Oceania reflect in this volume on the importance of contextual theology for our twenty-first century. Contextual theology offers fresh voices from every culture, and not just from the West. It calls for new ways of doing theology that embrace cultural values, but at the same time challenges them to the core. And it opens up new and fresh topics out of which and about which people can theologize. If the church is to be faithful to its mission, it needs to provide a feast at which all can be nourished.

Book Synopsis Orthodox Christianity in 21st Century Greece by : Vasilios N. Makrides

Download or read book Orthodox Christianity in 21st Century Greece written by Vasilios N. Makrides. This book was released on 2016-05-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the predominantly Orthodox countries that has never experienced communism is Greece, a country uniquely situated to offer insights about contemporary trends and developments in Orthodox Christianity. This volume offers a comprehensive treatment of the role Orthodox Christianity plays at the dawn of the twenty-first century Greece from social scientific and cultural-historical perspectives. This book breaks new ground by examining in depth the multifaceted changes that took place in the relationship between Orthodox Christianity and politics, ethnicity, gender, and popular culture. Its intention is two-fold: on the one hand, it aims at revisiting some earlier stereotypes, widespread both in academic and others circles, about the Greek Orthodox Church, its cultural specificity and its social presence, such as its alleged intrinsic non-pluralistic attitude toward non-Orthodox Others. On the other hand, it attempts to show how this fairly traditional religious system underwent significant changes in recent years affecting its public role and image, particularly as it became more and more exposed to the challenges of globalization and multiculturalism.
