Book excerpt: Are you known to strike like a thunderbolt when things don't go your way? Are you fortunate enough to have the Midas touch? Have you ever been struck by Cupid's arrow? Classically derived expressions are commonly used in our everyday language, yet many of us have little knowledge of the Greek and Roman influences that inspired them. With Opening Pandora's Box you'll discover the fascinating stories behind familiar phrases like Achilles' Heel, a Nemesis, To Fly too Close to the Sun, and more. For example, did you know that... The lifesaving operation known as the Caesarean section is so named because Julius Caesar was delivered by being cut out of his mother's womb? The original labyrinth was built on the orders of King Minos of Crete after Aphrodite cursed his wife to fall in love with a bull and produce a monstrous baby? The king locked the baby in a maze so complicated and tangled that, once in, he would never emerge. The word cereal is derived from the Italian corn goddess Ceres?Pry open the lid of the English language to find the secrets behind classical phrases we use every day.

Book Synopsis Opening Pandora's Box by : G. Nigel Gilbert

Download or read book Opening Pandora's Box written by G. Nigel Gilbert. This book was released on 1984-02-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a fresh approach to sociological analysis and, in particular, to the analysis of scientific culture. It moves away from previous studies, which have tended to focus on scientists' actions and beliefs to show that analysis of scientific discourse can be productive and revealing. The book demonstrates that scientists produce varying accounts of their actions and beliefs in different social situations. Rather than attempting to extract one coherent interpretation from these diverse accounts, the study identifies two basic scientific repertoires and shows how scientists use them to create their discourse. This provides a point of departure for more complex analytical topics. Discourse analysis is applied to show how different degrees of 'consensus' can be ascribed to the same group of scientists at a given moment in time through the application of standard interpretive techniques. Finally, discourse analysis is used to explore scientists' humour, a neglected topic that is shown to provide important insights into the normally hidden interpretive regularities which underlie the cultural diversity of science.
