Book Synopsis LGBTQ Youth in Care by : Brandon Olorin Shea

Download or read book LGBTQ Youth in Care written by Brandon Olorin Shea. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise of this project is to utilize the Arts through a multimedia platform for social justice, focusing specifically on the oppression of LGBTQ youth in foster care, by examining, analyzing, and portraying the stories of their experiences in the foster care system. The primary goals of this project are to educate and increase awareness about the challenges these youth face. Addressing these goals, I am using their narratives as the evidence source and inspiration for various art works, in an effort to raise a conversation and, hopefully, move towards engagement and involvement in changing the foster care system. In using these stories to create my own narrative through the Arts, I am revealing a truth about injustice, informing about the challenges faced by LGBTQ youth in care, disclosing false assumptions, and to making visible this group. I set out to convey the circumstances and personal histories of LGBTQ foster youth in a vivid and compelling manner, to heighten awareness, and dispel incomplete and inaccurate perceptions. The difficulties LGBTQ youth confront when formulating their identity within the confines of a primarily heterosexist and homophobic child welfare system are depicted in the labels attached to them, their risk-taking behaviors, and their greater propensity toward low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and suicide. Artisitically representing these challenges beyond statistical data has impact, not only on the foster care community, foster parents, and social workers, but on the LGBTQ youth themselves.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Foster Youth by : Elizabeth Trejos-Castillo

Download or read book Handbook of Foster Youth written by Elizabeth Trejos-Castillo. This book was released on 2018-03-22. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, there are over 400,000 youth living in foster care in the United States, with over 20,000 aging out of the child welfare system each year. Foster youth are more prone to experience short- and long-term adverse developmental outcomes including diminished academic achievement and career opportunities, poor mental and overall health, financial struggles, homelessness, early sexual intercourse, and substance abuse, many of these outcomes are risk factors for involvement in the juvenile justice system. Despite their challenges, foster youth have numerous strengths and positive assets that carry them through their journeys, helping them to overcome obstacles and build resilience. The Handbook of Foster Youth brings together a prominent group of multidisciplinary experts to provide nuanced insights on the complex dynamics of the foster care system, its impact on youth’s lives, and the roles of institutions and policies in the foster system. It discusses current gaps and future directions as well as recommendations to advance the field. This book provides an opportunity to reflect on the many challenges and strengths of foster youth and the child welfare system, and the combined efforts of caregivers, community volunteers, policy makers, and the professionals and researchers who work with them.
