Book Synopsis Ontogenesis of the Visual System by : Karl Zilles

Download or read book Ontogenesis of the Visual System written by Karl Zilles. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ontogenetic study of the central nervous system is an important tool for the under standing of its morphological and morpho-functional relations. Numerous qualitative results on the ontogenesis of the visual system can be found in the literature, but there are only very few quantitative results fulfilling the following parameters: (1) samples of sufficient size; (2) measurements considering results of stereology; (3) evaluation and interpretation performed with sound biomathematical methods; (4) quantitative of the shrinkage caused by the histological technic. The first three results independent demands can be fulfilled by using available computerized stereological and biomathe matical methods (Kretschmann and Wingert, 1968, 1969a, b, c, 1971; Wingert, 1969; Zilies and Wingert, 1972; Zilies et al., 1976a, c, d). The interdisciplinary cooperation between morphologists and mathematicians makes possible the analysis of the volume growth, the number of nerve-and glial cells in a whole brain region (Schleicher et al., 1975a, b; Zilies and Wingert, 1973a, b; Zilies et al., 1974, 1975a, b), the semi-automatic analysis of the nucleolar diameters in nerve cells (Zilies et al., 1976b) and computer aided compartment analysis with the point counting method (Zilies et al., in press b). Tupaia belangeri, an interesting animal for neurobiologists, was the experimental animal of choice because it combines the advan tages of a small brain (conducive to rapid processing) with many characteristics of the of the primate brain.

Book Synopsis Development of the Visual System by : S.P. Bhat

Download or read book Development of the Visual System written by S.P. Bhat. This book was released on 2004-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the tissues of the eye, including the lens, the cornea, the ciliary body, the neuroretina and the retinal pigment epithelium must work in harmony for the realization of clear vision. The phenotypic emergence of each of these tissues requires intercellular communication, which is achieved through direct physical contact as well as through diffusion and reception of the molecular beacons. This volume provides an overview of the molecular and cellular biology of eye development and encompasses themes like early gene expression in the surface ectoderm and the optic cup, retinal neurogenesis, signaling molecules and axonal guidance. It presents new findings on the influence of the lens on the development of the visual system and how gene expression in the optic cup controls differentiation of the lens fiber cell while established ideas about the morphogenesis of the ciliary body are challenged. A valuable source of information for developmental biologists and neurobiologists as well as ophthalmologists interested in understanding the relationship between temporally and spatially regulated gene activity and function and cellular interactions in early development and neuronal functions.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Visual System by : Martin J. Tovée

Download or read book An Introduction to the Visual System written by Martin J. Tovée. This book was released on 2008-07-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the successful formula of the first edition, Martin Tovée offers a concise but detailed account of how the visual system is organised and functions to produce visual perception. He takes his readers from first principles; the structure and function of the eye and what happens when light enters, to how we see and process images, recognise patterns and faces, and through to the most recent discoveries in molecular genetics and brain imaging, and how they have uncovered a host of new advances in our understanding of how visual information is processed within the brain. Incorporating new material throughout, including almost 50 new images, every chapter has been updated to include the latest research, and culminates in helpful key points, which summarise the lessons learnt. This book is an invaluable course text for students within the fields of psychology, neuroscience, biology and physiology.
