Book Synopsis Ontological Terror by : Calvin L. Warren

Download or read book Ontological Terror written by Calvin L. Warren. This book was released on 2018-05-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ontological Terror Calvin L. Warren intervenes in Afro-pessimism, Heideggerian metaphysics, and black humanist philosophy by positing that the "Negro question" is intimately imbricated with questions of Being. Warren uses the figure of the antebellum free black as a philosophical paradigm for thinking through the tensions between blackness and Being. He illustrates how blacks embody a metaphysical nothing. This nothingness serves as a destabilizing presence and force as well as that which whiteness defines itself against. Thus, the function of blackness as giving form to nothing presents a terrifying problem for whites: they need blacks to affirm their existence, even as they despise the nothingness they represent. By pointing out how all humanism is based on investing blackness with nonbeing—a logic which reproduces antiblack violence and precludes any realization of equality, justice, and recognition for blacks—Warren urges the removal of the human from its metaphysical pedestal and the exploration of ways of existing that are not predicated on a grounding in being.

Book excerpt: Features essays on ethics, politics, and law. This book re-evaluates the meaning, values, and the idea of freedom in Western culture. A daring marriage of philosophical theory and practical politics, this collection is the first of Gianni Vattimo's many books to combine his intellectual pursuits with his public and political life. Book Synopsis The Essence of Nihilism by : Emanuele Severino

Download or read book The Essence of Nihilism written by Emanuele Severino. This book was released on 2016-10-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, Emanuele Severino underwent a Vatican trial for the 'fundamental incompatibility' between his thought and the Christian doctrine, and was removed from his position as professor of philosophy at the Catholic University in Milan. The Essence of Nihilism published in 1972, was the first book to follow his expulsion, and to firmly establish Severino's preeminent position within the constellation of contemporary philosophy. In this groundbreaking book, Severino reinterprets the history of Western philosophy as the unfolding of 'the greatest folly', that is, of the belief that 'things come out of nothing and fall back into nothing'. According to Severino, such a typically Western understanding of reality has produced a belief in the radical 'nothingness' of things. This, in turn has justified the treatment of the world as an object of exploitation, degradation and destruction. To move beyond Western nihilism, suggests Severino, we must first of all 'return to Parmenides'. Joining forces with the most venerable of Greek philosophers, Severino confutes the 'path of night' of nihilism, and develops a new philosophy grounded on the principle of the eternity of reality and of every single existent.

Book Synopsis Nihilism and Emancipation by : Robert Rhodes

Download or read book Nihilism and Emancipation written by Robert Rhodes. This book was released on 2018-06-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequently related to the negative thought all of lifestyle is useless, nihilism, as a philosophical concept, is far less sensational. it is the ethical doctrine that there are no ethical absolutes or foolproof natural rules, that "truth" is inescapably very subjective. Because the circumstances for equal rights and independence are not "naturally" given, community must definitely create these principles or it will certainly be taken in by irrationality, tendency, and oppression. Rhodes suggests that the infighting, timidity, and misunderstandings that have overtaken modern generous thought and state policies are the products an extended and indulgent grieving over the loss of the transcendental dad figure any organization or power framework that describes fact, knowledge, and truth. Until humankind triumphs over its need for exterior authority whether it be structured religious beliefs, the nation-state, or free-market capitalism emancipation will stay unachievable. Gathering 14 of Rhodes' most significant articles on principles, state policies, and law, Nihilism and Emancipation is a revealing reevaluation of significance, principles, and the idea of independence in European lifestyle.
