Book excerpt: Bringing together the findings from psychoanalysts across the globe, this book introduces and describes the research practices utilised by the Working Parties that were created by the European Psychoanalytical Federation and later supported by the International Psychoanalytical Association. The book opens with a discussion of the epistemology of research in psychoanalysis, then the various Working Parties describe their methodology and findings, and finally, in the last chapter, an assessment is made of what contributions this oxygenating movement has made to psychoanalysis. It examines topics including individual and group work, supervision, clinical interpretation, erotic transference and psychosomatics, and contains contributions from many distinguished analysts. Providing a wealth of information on the place of research in evaluating new clinical methods and tools, this book is key reading for psychoanalysts both in practice and in training.

Book Synopsis Modern Psychoanalysis by : Judd Marmor

Download or read book Modern Psychoanalysis written by Judd Marmor. This book was released on 2018-04-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Psychoanalys is is a definitive exploration of the expanding horizons of this still controversial approach to and treatment of human behavior. In the first paperback release of a work sponsored by the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, thirty-five authorities explore new approaches to psychoanalytic theory and therapy, and examine the growing interaction between this field and the other social and behavioral sciences. Modern Psychoanalysis demonstrates how some of the leading figures are bringing their discipline into the mainstream of biological and social through! making use of systems theory, information processing, the constructs of adaptation and learning, and other new tools and findings. The book is unusually free of the jargon that has separated psychoanalysis in the past from the rest of behavioral and social science. Some of the authors and their subjects are: Roy Grinker, "Conceptual Progress in Analysis"; Jin-gen Ruesch, "Psychoanalysis between Two Cultures"; Edward Tauber, "Dreaming and Modern Dream Theory"; Jules Masserman, "The Biody-namic Roots of Psychoanalysis"; Lewis H. Wolberg, "Short-term Psychotherapy"; Stuart M. Finch and Albert Cain, "Psychoanalysis of Children"; Morris Parloff, "Analytic Group Psychotherapy"; Salvador Minuchin, "The Low Socioeconomic Population"; Leonard Duhl and Robert Leopold, "Psychoanalysis and Social Agencies"; Leo'n Edel, "Psychoanalysis and the Creative Arts"; Arnold A. Rogow, "Psychiatry, History and Political Science"; and John R. Seeley, "Psychiatry: Revolution, Reform and Reaction." The volume is prepared with the rigor and comprehensiveness that should make the book a standard handbook for psychiatrists, psychologists, and behavioral scientists. And it is written with a sense of curious readers who may simply be interested in the basic stances of this controversial field of theory and practice. It has earned sufficient plaudits to be called a classic in the field. Judd Manner's new introduction gives added weight to such claims.

Book Synopsis Insight and Interpretation by : Roy Schafer

Download or read book Insight and Interpretation written by Roy Schafer. This book was released on 2020-11-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insight and interpretation, the crucial tools of psychoanalytic process, are no longer treated with the respect they deserve. In psychoanalytic literature the focus has shifted towards the effects of countertransference and its role in the relationship between patient and analyst. By the same token, the equally important question of the analyst's neutrality is regularly misunderstood and discredited. Roy Schafer explains, in his typically lucid and even-handed approach, how these new shifts in contemporary psychoanalysis have often resulted in conceptual imbalance and erratic technique. His goal, however, is not to reject these recent contributions but rather to integrate them into a more cohesive understanding of the psychoanalytic process. He powerfully demonstrates how unconscious and archaic fantasies inform the patient’s narrative. Factors such as invasion of the mind, threat punishment, seduction, control, envy, withdrawal, and evasion can find expression through the transference. Interpretation of the transference, in turn, provides the patient with the insight of what it means to understand and be understood, and why it so often threatening. Therefore, when these fantasies are played out in the countertransference, they become a tool for furhter elucidation of these unconscious fantasies that underlie the anlaytic relationship.

Book Synopsis Psychoanalysis Comparable and Incomparable by : David Tuckett

Download or read book Psychoanalysis Comparable and Incomparable written by David Tuckett. This book was released on 2008-02-28. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we know when what is happening between two people should be called psychoanalysis? What is a psychoanalytic process and how do we know when one is taking place? Psychoanalysis Comparable and Incomparable describes the rationale and ongoing development of a six year programme of highly original meetings conducted by the European Psychoanalytic Federation Working Party on Comparative Clinical Methods. The project comprises over seventy cases discussed by more than five hundred experienced psychoanalysts over the course of sixty workshops. Authored by a group of leading European psychoanalysts, this book explores ways for psychoanalysts using different approaches to learn from each other when they present their work to fellow psychoanalysts, and provides tools for the individual practitioner to examine and improve his or her own approach. As described in detail in its pages, sticking to the task led to some surprising experiences, raising fundamental questions about the way clinical discussion and supervision are conducted in psychoanalysis. Well known by many in the psychoanalytic community and the object of much interest and debate, this project is described by those who have had the closest contact with it and will satisfy a widely held curiosity in psychoanalysts and psychotherapists throughout the world. David Tuckett is winner of the 2007 Sigourney Award.
