Book excerpt: This book examines key aspects of the history, philosophy, and culture of science in India, especially as they may be comprehended in the larger idea of an Indian civilization. The authors, drawn from a range of disciplines, discuss a wide array of issues — scientism and religious dogma, dialectics of faith and knowledge, science under colonial conditions, science and study of grammar, western science and classical systems of logic, metaphysics and methodology, and science and spirituality in the Mahabharata. This collection of essays aims to evolve a framework in which science, culture, and society in India may be studied fruitfully across disciplines and historical periods. With its diverse themes and original approaches, the book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in the fields of the history and philosophy of science, science and religion, cultural studies and colonial studies, philosophy and history, as well as India studies and South Asian studies.

Book Synopsis Nature and Culture by : Roddam Narasimha

Download or read book Nature and Culture written by Roddam Narasimha. This book was released on 2011-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: B/w & Colour Illustrations Description: The volumes of the PROJECT OF HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India s heritage and present them in an interrelated way. In spite of their unitary look, these volumes recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is marked by what may be called methodologically pluralism . The core of this volume is woven around seven sub themes. The first is a broad contemporary perspective, chiefly sociological. The next considers the views of ancient Indian texts in Sanskrit, from the Vedas which adore nature but are puzzled by creation, to the myths of the more popular puranas and the forceful reasoning of the Yoga-Vasistha. There follows the view of classical Indic sciences: rationalist ayurveda, inferential linguistics, computational astronomy and so forth. A short interlude (Section 6) attempts comparisons between western and Indic views (realizing of course that neither is monolithic). Modern science (section 7) is increasingly tending to the view that culture is not a unique possession of human civilizations, but also of animals and even insects a view incidentally long held in India. Finally there is a brief survey of development in the twentieth century: the role of new technology in sculptural art.

Book Synopsis On China by India by : Zhiyu Shi

Download or read book On China by India written by Zhiyu Shi. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This highly original book shifts our attention away from the preoccupations of the U.S. to India and from conventional social science and area studies perspectives to civilizational sensibilities. In a series of searching essays by well-informed Indian scholars, China's rise appears in a fresh light. Rather than seeking to bend China's experience only to the impatient expectations of secular liberalism, this important book reminds us of the imagined affinities that a civilizational understanding of self and other creates in India for China and the empathetic patience it engenders. Our understanding of China is greatly enriched by new insights that this broader vision yields." - Peter J. Katzenstein, Walter S. Carpenter, Jr. Professor of International Studies, Cornell University
