Book Synopsis New Developments in the Management of Gastric Cancer by : P. Malfertheiner

Download or read book New Developments in the Management of Gastric Cancer written by P. Malfertheiner. This book was released on 2005-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall prognosis for patients with gastric cancer remains poor as tumors are often diagnosed at an advanced stage, despite new developments and technical advances in endoscopic diagnosis and therapy. This publication brings together leading experts in the fields of basic research and clinical management of gastric cancer, to share their expertise with the clinical community. State-of-the-art reviews discuss the pathogenesis of and the most important risk factors for the development of gastric cancer, potential benefits of chemoprevention and Helicobacter pylori eradication. Moreover, new diagnostic modalities and surgical therapy, including the potential benefits of neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies, are presented. As most patients require palliative therapy because of locally advanced or metastasized cancers, several reviews are dedicated to advances in the chemotherapy of advanced gastric cancers and peritoneal metastasis. Finally, future approaches towards a molecular diagnosis and therapy are described. Those involved in the management of gastric cancer patients will find the information presented in this publication of utmost help and will benefit greatly for their daily routine.

Book Synopsis Management of Gastric Cancer by : Paul H. Sugarbaker

Download or read book Management of Gastric Cancer written by Paul H. Sugarbaker. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastric cancer has been one of the great malignant scourges affecting man kind for as long as medical records have been kept. Until operative resection pioneered by Bilroth and others became available, no effective treatment was feasible and death from cancer was virtually inevitable. Even with resection by total gastrectomy, the chances of tumor eradication remained small. Over recent years, however, the situation has been changing. Some changes have resulted from better understanding of the disease, early detec tion, and better management techniques with applied clinical research, but the reasons for other changes are poorly understood. For example, the incidence of gastric cancer is decreasing, especially in westernized societies, where it has fallen from one of the most common cancers to no longer being in the top five causes of cancer death. Still it remains the number one killer of adult males in Japan and Korea. Whether the reduced incidence in western societies is a result of dietary changes or methods of food preservation, or some other reason, is as yet uncertain. Improvements in outcome have been reported from mass screening and early detection; more refined techniques of establishing early diagnosis, tumor type, and tumor extent; more radical surgical resection; and resection at earlier stages of disease.

Book Synopsis New Trends in Gastric Cancer by : P.I. Reed

Download or read book New Trends in Gastric Cancer written by P.I. Reed. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that the incidence of gastric cancer is declining in the Western world, it remains a significant problem with respect to accurate diagnosis and treatment since it has a high mortality rate. In June 1989 an International Conference was held at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" entitled "New Trends in Gastric Cancer: Background and videosurgery". During this meeting background information on the aetiopathogenesis of gastric cancer was presented together with talks and video presentations on the latest advances in the treatment of gastric carcinoma, both from the European and Japanese experience. Because of the poor prognosis of gastric carcinoma there is increasing pressure for early detection. Some of the problems in the early detection of gastric carcinoma are discussed together with methods of surveillance of high-risk subjects. It is generally accepted that the surgical approach to gastric carcinoma should take into account the site and extent of the lesion and there are chapters on new methods for pre and intraoperative staging of the disease which allow a more logical approach to surgery. A comparison between Japanese and Western rule and results was attempted and reasons for the differences were investigated. Since the field is still evolving not all aspects could be covered, and those angles not approached in this book will be addressed in a second International Conference to be held in Rome in June 1990.

Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Management of Digestive Cancers by : Toshio Takahashi

Download or read book Recent Advances in Management of Digestive Cancers written by Toshio Takahashi. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is the leading cause of death in many countries, and digestive cancer is one of the most common types of neoplasms. Advances in research on the management of digestive cancer therefore represent an important contribution to the welfare of humankind throughout the world. The VICC Kyoto International Symposium on Recent Advances in the Management of Digestive Cancer was held in Kyoto from March 31 to April 2, 1993 under the presidency of Dr. T. Takahashi of the Kyoto Prefectural Vniversity of Medicine. At this event, leading researchers and clinicians presented new findings and the latest results of clinical trials concerning digestive cancers. The VICC President and other members of the Executive Committee of the VICC also gave speeches on their own fields, and more than 1000 participants from 28 countries were very well received. This book presents the proceedings of this symposium. In addition to 30 selected papers presented at special lectures and symposia by invited speakers, this book contains 230 free papers presented at poster sessions during this conference.

Book Synopsis Gastric Carcinoma by : Daniela Lazar

Download or read book Gastric Carcinoma written by Daniela Lazar. This book was released on 2013-01-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastric cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related death in the world. There are no screening tests available for its diagnosis, therefore patients usually presents in late stages, associated with poor prognosis. Currently, many efforts are made toward new advances in the treatment strategies. The book makes an insight into the assessment of premalignant lesions, current management of early gastric cancer, risk and protective factors in gastric carcinogenesis. "Gastric cancer" provides a detailed description of the morphologic classification, molecular changes and epigenetic alterations of this tumor. The book describes the role of different diagnostic tools in the preoperative assessment of patients and the most important factors contributing to the prognosis. Moreover, it describes the current surgical and chemotherapeutic options for gastric neoplasm. This publication may open new and interesting gates for further research concerning carcinogenesis, genetic and epigenetic alterations, signaling pathways, H. pylori infection, the discovery of protective factors against gastric cancer and of revolutionary therapies of this tumor.
