Book excerpt: Although the twentieth century is now best remembered for two world wars, in the future it may be at least equally well-known for its profusion of little wars against great opponents. The trend began long before mujahideen took up arms against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. From China and Vietnam to Palestine, Algeria, and Ireland, Daniel Moran explores the nationalist insurgencies that have characterized much of recent warfare. Vivid maps detailing the wars and photographs from the front lines. A thorough chronology of the wars of national liberation, from the Chinese Civil War to Vietnam. A look at the guerilla tactics that have changed the face of modern warfare. An epilogue discussing the current situation in Afghanistan.

Book Synopsis War By Other Means by : Carlyle A. Thayer

Download or read book War By Other Means written by Carlyle A. Thayer. This book was released on 2021-12-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1989, examines the creation and implementation of Communist policy in Vietnam during the crucial period between the 1954 Geneva Conference and the establishment of the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam in December 1960. This study challenges long-held views about the origins and nature of the Viet Cong. It carefully examines the various stages in the struggle for ‘national liberation’ during this period, reviews the consequences of the failure of purely political means to achieve reunification and then focuses on the struggle between the Diem regime and the Communists.

Download or read book Regulating the Use of Force in Wars of National Liberation: The Need for a New Regime written by Noelle Higgins. This book was released on 2009-12-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reconsiders and critically evaluates the complex international legal framework which seeks to regulate wars of national liberation in the light of two fascinating case studies. It tests the effectiveness of both the jus ad bellum and jus in bello aspects of the current legal framework by applying it to self-determination wars waged in the South Moluccas and Aceh by armed groups against Indonesia. The book highlights the various difficulties inherent in the current legal framework as well as the ad hoc and unpredictable practice of States in relation to its application. The work concludes with recommendations on how the current framework should be updated and enhanced so that it can adequately deal with modern self-determination conflicts.
